I have been building T5 transmissions all week, but "I did manage to get a few things done on the truck. I finished installing the trailer hitch, and installed back up lights, and a trailer connector. I am also installing a junction box to keep all the connections protected from the elements.

On the radiator support, the original brace in the center interfered with the fan, so ?I made a new one that has a ring around the fan motor. The brace is necessary to tie the front fenders together.

I have the cab here, so today we flipped it on it's back so we could insulate the bottom. This has the best floor I have ever seen in one of these trucks. There were no holes at all.

Frank,
what are you using for floor insulation? Or more correctly what combination of materials are you using?

The bottom side gets a home made version of Lizard skin made with glass microballs and latex paint. then a coating of bed liner. Inside will be Boom mat, and foil faced recycled fiber insulation, and more of the microballs on the inside of the roof.

I also used the homemade micro ball sound deadener on the inside of my coupe. It works so well my wife can use a normal voice tone while telling me how to drive, slow down, ect.!!

Thanks Frank, that's exactly what I use, just always on the lookout for new ideas

Back on the 46. I spent most of last week sandblasting small parts. Some went out to powder coating, the others went to a local body shop for paint. Today I started filling a few unneeded holes in the firewall.

The camera worked so I have some pictures.

The original plan was to reuse the heater that was in it, but the owner decided a while back he wanted AC installed. There was a set of holes for the old heater, and another set of holes for the original heater. So four holes for hoses, and eight holes for mounting bolts, and nothing lined up with what I am doing. In addition some of the mounting holes went through the reinforcing ribs, and they were bent up, and someone in the distant past had hammered a bunch of pin dents in the upper firewall on the right side. There were a few small unneeded holes on the upper left, and since I was going to have to repaint it, I decided to fix them too.

I like the firewall to look original , just with the holes filled, so I am repairing the ribs where they were damaged. I'll fill the big holes, then go back and do the ribs.

I dollied out the dents, and started filling holes.I started with the large holes, they were reamed to give me fresh metal, and I used 3/16" fender washers to fill the holes. They were the right diameter, and the center hole can be welded shut with just a copper backing plate. In one case I had two holes side by side, so I made it one oval hole, and cut a piece of 16 steel to fit it. I hold the patch in place with a Harbor Freight welding magnet, and tack it in place. Then I dolley it flat, and continue the tacks until it's all filled. I grind the inside flat, do several tacks on the back side, the grind the outside flat with a 2" flap disc. I dress up the inside, hold a copper chill behind it, and weld up the center hole. Just keep doing it until there are no more holes

Glad to see you're staying in practice with such a fun part of building. :)

I did some more work on the firewall, still more to go.I started fixing the other side of the overhead panel, cut out the rust, cut out a patch, bent it to shape, and fitted it into the hole. I also sand blasted some more parts. I though I had done them all but I found some more. :D

I worked on cleaning out my fathers shop Saturday, lots of memories there.

Sunday I welded up the overhead panel, there are a few wrinkles to work out, I am going to do that Monday

Back on the 46. I finished the holes in the firewall, I still have to use a small bit of filler to finish it, and there are some studs to weld in yet to mount the firewall insulation, and mount the air conditioner.

I also finished the overhead panel, I had to shrink some wrinkles out of it. Now I can sand blast it again and paint it.
