I finally got back on the firewall. I needed some one to hold the studs from the inside, while I welded them from the outside. The studs are to mount the AC, fuse box, insulation, and so forth. Josh stopped by and was my holder monday evening.

In the meantime I assembled the cowl vent linkage, the emergency brake handle, and the steering column. I am still sand blasting parts, mostly small stuff now, but even that can be time consuming.

That firewall sure looks good but man those parts look like brand new OE stuff. Such nice work  8)

They are called elevator bolts. They have a flat head about 1" diameter. I mark the center of the head, and while one guy holds it on the inside, I plug weld it through a 5/16" hole on the outside. Then 4 or 5 tacks in the inside around the outside of the head.

I'm familiar with elevator bolts but those didn't look like the ones I used 30 years ago. :) Thank you. I will attempt to remember that in the future.

Well I have some more results to show you. The windshield frame is a bit rough, the owner does not want to spend the $600 for a new one, so I am repairing this one. It will be powder coated black. I am using Lab Metal to fill the pits, that will stand up to the heat of powder coating. Some time in the past some one drilled out the screws that fasten the two halves together. The screws are #4, and they used a 3/8 bit to remove them. So the holes are much too big for the screws. I am brazing 4mm washers into the 3/8" holes to close the holes up, and grinding it back flush. I also brazed up some pin holes while I was at it. I made an aluminum slug to insert as a backer to control the brass. I have one side done, then sand blast again before using the Lab metal to smooth them out.

I assembled the steering column. I had to cut a double D on the lower end to fit a Ujoint to that end. I put a Delrin bushing in the bottom of the column in an aluminum adapter, and drilled it for a grease fitting to be able to lube it, and to hold it in place.

I finished with the firewall welding, DP40 primed it, used less than a golf ball of filler to finish it up. Then another coat of Epoxy before I used some high build primer to block out. Once it's blocked I will top coat it with DP90LF, and then Hot rod black.

Very good. That frame has to be a pita!

Firewall looks good and the steering shaft is slick.  8)  Windshield frame sure looks like a challenge.

I'm not familar w/Lab Metal product. Is it like an epoxy, where do you obtain it?

The firewall looks great.

Is lab metal something like alumna weld?
