Hooley, I'm a slow thinker so here we go. You said you ran out of gear. This means the motor was at the rev limit? Do you use a rev limiter? Is it at peak HP and is rolling over? If you use the 249 gears would you be able to take off from the standing start? I know you get a push on the salt. Is that just to protect the salt?  How tall are the rear tires?

Hooley

Mikej,
       It went through the traps a little over 8,000 rpm's. I like to keep it in the 7,000's.  I should be able to take off at the mile by slipping the clutch a little. At Bonneville with the 2:49 gear it want's to stall or if enough rpm's , spin the tires.  Concrete should be better for traction.  I am going to order some new tires soon. That should help also.
 If we think it needs pushed off we have a board to put on the pick-up. I should put it on just in case this next trip.
There isn't any rev limiter  and the motor is capable of the 8,500 rpm's but it is a stress on everything.

When we figure the tires we use 27.8 in. tall. I don't know the tire growth is. That could make a little difference.

Hooley, This is what I come up with given your run at Ohio.(3:00) With the 2:75 gears.

8000rpm = 243 mph
7900rpm = 240 mph
7800rpm = 237 mph
7700rpm = 234 mph
7600rpm = 231 mph

If I understand correctly, the drag would effect, the the motor Rpm. The mechanical parts would be the same unless there is clutch slipage (drag) or tire growth at the added speed.

Hooley

YES, that looks good if it will make the power to make the rpm's. That is where I would like to be this next trip .  The 231 would be my goal.

If I were to build the car again, I would put a Quick change in. It sure makes the gear changes easy.
I am gonna try some new tires and that should help the first 1/4 mile which should help the top end.  This is seat of the pants racing.

My goal is to make it to the Ohio Mile for the July meet. That is July 7 and 8th.

I am not going to do the dry sump system at this time.  I may put a vacuum pump on .  I am making plans to build a "AA" motor. some where in the 550 to 600 cubic engine for blown class.  It just seems like it should be done.

I'mconfussed. Are you thinking about a bigger motor for July or better tires and better parachutes? Maybe it's thinking twice as fast in a car than I've ever been. GPster

Hooley

Sorry GPster,
                    The bigger motor is a plan for next year with a trip to Bonneville.  For OHIO it is new tires and a vacuum pump . This winter or next spring change motors out. I am just now putting the engine plan together. We want mid 500 cubic inches or less.  The more I research I am bringing the cubic inches down. Trying to sort it all out to come up with a plan.

540 to 565 cid are real common engine size now. Parts should be easy to get

Hopefully the discussion on Landracing dot Com gets back on subject for your  AA engine .

Tony, I have already found out a lot from that post.

yep,  I am only a spectator of land speed racing.  I really enjoy reading the tech stuff these guys posts.  Learn something new each time I visit the site there or at least another way to solve a problem

Hooley, Another question. Is the vacuum pump used because of blow by? Access pressure in the block causes leaks or problems with the lub system?

Hooley

Mikej,
          It pulls a vacuum on the inside of the engine and keeps the internal pressure down. I am not sure that makes any cents. THEY say it's good for 40 HP.  We have always built up pressure in in the engine and had leaks. Pushed the front seal out once. Made a front seal retainer and fixed that.
Pushed the gasket from between the intake and the block. Started using "The Right Stuff"  Fixed that .  This is what I think can be stopped with a dry sump or a Vacuum pump.  The first pass at Ohio the front cover came loose and leaked oil. Tighten them up and no leak the second pass.  I went all over it this last couple of weeks, put Locktight on the front cover bolts. I hope this is the cure.
  We are thinking of building a "AA" motor[something over 502 cubic inches] for next year. That is why I have backed off on spending a bunch of money on this motor.  I'll try this for the July meet.  I may just leave it alone and do nothing.
 It's a different plan every other day. I am going to have to pick one and go with it.

OK Checking the schedual that I try to keep (family) the July dates work wonderful for me. My wife does an annual holiday that's called "Grammy Camp" where we have the grandkids stay with us for a week and the initial dates are July 9-13. I'll be able to go to Cincinnati a few days early and bring them back to Marietta with me. Unfortunately I haven't sent that Hot Rod site to my grandson yet. He's only eight and hasn't got his own WEB site yet. But he'll be nine the 4th of June so that's liable to change soon. GPster

I have made some decisions about the 400 motor in the car right now.  I will run it a couple more times at Ohio and build a AA motor for Bonneville next year.  There for I am not gonna add more stuff to the engine at this time and will put that money in a bigger motor.   That is todays plan.

     The Ohio Mile starts today with inspection with racing tomorrow.  If anybody goes keep us posted about what is happening.

GPster, I'm glad you will be able to be there.

Later,
