Rodder's Roundtable / Burgulars! Crooks ripped me off!
December 05, 2004, 04:31:19 PM
Years ago I had a small workshop at the house we had in Calif.

Being a CHP Trooper, everyone kept an eye on each others house during their shift.

Me, I was too far out for most of em to check mine.  Wife and kids went back to Missouri for a weeks vacation.  I was at work, dispatcher called me and said my garage had been broken into.  Neighbor had seen a panel truck leave.

Called the Insurance company, got an adjuster out there and presented him with a Spread sheet list of every item in the garage before the robbery and a series of pictures of the inside of the shop.

They B*tched like all get out, but they did pay up fully....  I gave em the list and said you determine what is missing.  then I'll recheck your work and we go from there.  Adjuster was very though, he only missed 1 item...........

So, everyone who hasn't been hit yet, inventory your shop, everything in it. serial #'s and etc.  It pays off in the long run.  Unusual items, take a good picture of that item, otherwise take overlay pictures starting at the door and working around the room.....  Don't forget up in the rafters....

Oh yeah, they found some of the stuff a few years later in Pawn Shops.  That was before the Pawn Shop owner had to record names and etc.  So no one was ever prosecuted.

Rodder's Roundtable / desktop PC computer brands

Our machines run 24/7, set in auto repair shop dust and no failures.

Only time 1 is shut off is if we loose our cable connection, which here recently has been pretty often.

I call the provider and tell em we is a losing a router, they tell me to turn off my cable modem, let it set for 45 seconds, rebot my computer, and then turn on te modem.......

When that doesn't fix the problem they come back with, oh, we just found a bad router........  I kind of grin to myself and say, ok, when ya'll going to get it upgraded so as to handle these outages....   Their response is HUH...............

My Dell is almost 5 years old, lacks 21 days and it has not gave an ounce of trouble.........  Son has a Compaq I don't think you would ever be able to pry out of his fingers........  He thinks it is the greatest.  So, pick a favorite and go for it.......  There is lemons in all of em......

PS:  I would not have a IBM however, but that is just my personal feelings.....

We use a HP out in the shop and basically due to the dust and dirt it is down 80% of the time.  Can't say it is the computers fault however.

Rodder's Roundtable / 6V/12V question
December 04, 2004, 12:50:32 AM
George:

1.  Horn can take 12 V
2.  Starter, take it to Auto Zone, they test this stuff for free.
3.  Amp guage, see # 2
4.  Generator, see # 2
5.  Temp guage.  Boil a pan of water, using a manual temp guage like for testing refrigerator for temp.  Put both in the water, not the guage, just the sender unit,  and they should read about the same temperature.
6.  Oil pressure guage, test with low volume of air off the compressor.  If yours is like mine, I have a ball valve and can cut it way way down. Then hit it with the air nossle.
7.  What da heck else did you ask about.

My forgetter done forgot.

Rodder's Roundtable / What could be confusing about this

Chevrolet wants their transmission back.........  The Squad car was never supposed to of went to the salvage yard.   Chevrolet found out about it and was there the next day with an enclosed van and took it back to Detroit.

They stopped in at the kids shop and they want the transmission also.  Can we say it must of been a TEST car and a test tranny.

Working on a deal where Chevrolet will give me one I can make work in exchange for the one I have.........  Will work for me...  Now if I could just get em to install it also that would be nice........  Only have a 11" driveshaft, and it is a bear to get in and out...... That is OVERALL length, shaft and u-joints......

I know,,,,,,,,,,,,  mine cost me $600 and I had to haul it to California.

No one at the time back here in the sticks had a big enough oven to hold the frame........

Rodder's Roundtable / Frame Paint

My frame was painted first and everytime I drove it it got a rock chip.

6 years later, I pulled the body and had it powder coated.

Now almost 12 years later it has 2 chips in it where I dropped a wrench on it.

If you got the time and the $$$$, Powder Coat is my choice...

Since I done went over the 70 years old, I have basically retired the Trike for Power Tour.  Well a couple of mishaps with it also helped.  Hit a pheasant one year before the Tour and cost me a radiator that took 8 months to get built.   Then I had a guy back into me and bend my front forks.   Went from 35MM to 41MM tubes and the Triple tree and etc.  What a mess that was.  Still trying to find a front fender for it.  Hopefully Xmas it will come.    So I been a renting Mustang's from Hertz Rent A car and enjoying the A/C, power steering and the extra storage room for chairs and etc.

Got 2 more grandkids, and 1 great grandkid since I saw ya'll in Nebraska Run.

Denise, it is good to see you are alive and well.

Have missed you and the Big Olds on Hot Rod Power Tour.

This rearend does not have a set of gears that go that low. It would have to be after market and so far I have not had any luck getting aftermarket items for this rear end.  It is a bast*rd rear end I'm told.....  Since I already have the 4 link welded on to this housing, I'll run it till it breaks and then I'll worry about getting a FORD 9" under there...

My current 3.23's are as low as they go..

The Police Cruiser is a Caprice platform, and it is a 2003 with Impala markings..........  Anyway that is what Chevy is telling me.....  They were not for the General Public to purchase.  Chevy really quizzed me when I gave em the VIN # before they would give me any information.

Apparently this is not a 2003.

It is a RWD vehicle.

On the windshield at the salvage yard it said 2003.

Tomorrow I'll go get the Vin and check it out........

Thanks............

On our shop we have a stand alone generator, which has come in very handy over the past 20 years.........

It is set to cycle itself and run for 30 minutes once a month.  The battery for it has a charger set on a timer that charges the battery for 20 minutes once a week.  Battery is inside the warm shop, power plan is inside an attached building, built just for the generator.  Battery and motor are like 10' apart.......  Bottle gas sets outside in the cold air......

We fuel it with a 100# bottle gas (propane) bottle.   If it should run out on us we have a small 20# tank to handle it till we can get our 100# bottle refilled......

So far it has only failed to start once.  Some idiot, won't say who, put a new bottle on and forgot to turn the gas valve on.....  My son hasn't forgot that, and that was 16 years ago........

The 3 wheel unit has a 383 Chevy Stroker, 350 TH tranny and a Suburban 3.23 gear rearend.

I bought a transmission out of a 2003 Chevy Police Cruiser, (Impala), which is a OD unit.

Since I do not have a computer in this rig, is there a way I can fool the transmission into thinking there is one there and get a benefit from the OD tranny?  Or did I buy a boat anchor?

Any assistance would be most greatly appreciated.

You can e-mail me at rjb448@hotmail.com  if you so desire o save bandwidth.........

TIA  Russ........
