Rodder's Roundtable / Air compresser's down
December 21, 2010, 01:05:43 PM
Someone gave me a junk 5hp, 30 gallon one time.  I thought I would give it shot since I wouldn't be out anything.  They're easy to "refresh".  Disassemble the compressor head and remove the reed valves from the plate.  They typically get gunked up and corroded here.  Use scotchbrite and carefully polish the reed valves and seat being carefull not to bend the thin reed valve or score it.  I used a ball hone and gave the cylinders a quick pass or two to break the glaze and reseat the piston rings.  Trace the head and valve plate to cut some new head gaskets from a sheet of Form-A-Gasket material.  Clean it all up and reassemble with a new can of compressor oil.  Total cost was $8 and mine will pump to 160psi with no problem.

Trying to patch a rusted out tank is big NO NO.  Put the good compressor on the good tank.

I'm planning a trip the Museum and then maybe up to see Mackinac Island for a day and back down the east coast to see the dunes.  How long should I allow at the museum and village?  Any other sites of interest you can recommend?  Too bad I missed the car show!

Rodder's Roundtable / Model A Headers

Take a look at Rewarder headers.  They don't get much attention but I have seen them a few times and are nice quality with 3/8" flanges.  They offer angle and straight plug, standard and D-port in a variety of primary tube sizes also.  They custom made a set for a friends nailhead Buick and are good to work with.

Rodder's Roundtable / My break in today

I sat on a jury for what they called a "spring trap" case.  The guy owned rural property with a detached garage that kept getting broken into because he wasn't living there at the time.  He rigged up shotgun shells with model rocket igniters glued into the primer and stuck in PVC tubes aimed at the door.  A transformer hooked to the light switch would heat the igniters and fire the shells.  A sheriff he asked to check on the property happened to go in the garage, tried to turn on the lights (luckily power was off) and then noticed all the wires and tubes and got his * out of there.  They busted the homeowner for setting the trap.  He claimed he had them outside to go off and alert neighbors and the vandals must have relocated them to get him the next time he checked on his own property.  He was guilty as hell but we had to let him go because we couldn't prove he set it.  My problem was, the "vandals" used the same black RTV to glue down the tubes aimed at the door, that he admitted gluing the whole shot gun shell/PVC tube/igniter assembly with.  Moral of my ramble: don't go setting any kind of harmful traps to protect your property.  Innocent people will get hurt or the laws protect the criminals more than the victim.

40,

I like the spring loaded hinge idea.  Maybe you could add some kind of limit switch to it that would work a reminder light on the dash.  Or, wire it into the starter solenoid so the car won't start if the plate is in the up position. Would make a great anti theft deterent also!

If you're still interested, contact the Early Tin Dusters car club out of Quincy.  They put on a great show in the fall and should be able to help.

A freind of mine TIG welds 4-link bars on a powered roller jig using the foot control pedal and drive motor from an old sewing machine.  Works great!

Rodder's Roundtable / Faulty air compressor (shop)
October 20, 2007, 11:31:06 PM
Someone gave me an old Craftsman 5hp, two cylinder that was worn out.  I figured I would try a quick rebuild on it before I did anything else.  I ran a 3-finger hone to rough up the cylinders, then removed and polished the reed valve blades and seats with scotchbrite, and reassembled it with the old rings.  It pumped up like normal to 145 pounds after that so I cleaned it up and painted everything so it looks like new.  I've got about 8 bucks in the whole deal.

Rodder's Roundtable / some progress on my shop
September 12, 2007, 01:14:28 PM
Do a search for "Supertherm".  I was watching Bob Villa over the weekend and they were spraying this on the outside of a home made from discarded steel shipping containers.  It appears to be the same thing as Lizard Skin, ceramic microspheres suspended in a urethane, only white.  R19 in the thickness of a credit card and waterproof.  I didn't dig long enough to find a price...probably only $30 bucks a gallon instead of $180 for two!!! I will think about using on my car when I get to that point.
