Rodder's Roundtable / 57 With no brakes
February 11, 2010, 02:54:58 AM
A bunch of yrs ago I came up with a one person bleeder. I took a i qt glass mayo jar with a metal lid (washed it first) drilled two 3/16 holes in the lid. Raising a child with asthma I had 100' left over nebulizer hoses. I put one 8' hose into the lid, extending just enough to seal. I attached a few hoses together to reach the farthest away wheel cylinder and made sure it reached the bottom of the jar. I would loosten the bleeder nut on whichever wheel I was bleeding, slide the hose over said bleeder nut. Start the car, pop the top off the master cylinder and make sure it's full. Disconnect the vacume advance hose off the carb base and attach the short hose. Stand close by and repeatedly refill the master cylinder till the jar was either full or I thought it was completely flushed, at which time I'd go tighten the bleeder nut, reattach the vacume advance hose and Walla!  Flushed and bled in just a couple minutes. It can be moved to any wheel of your choice, empty the jar and start all over. :D

It's a whopping 20 and headed down here in NCW. We got 4 1/2" of snow last night. Driving was fun! I was home before the 12 o'clock deadline. I wish every one a happy and prosperous NEW YEAR. :D

Rodder's Roundtable / Tie wrap replacement
December 14, 2009, 05:53:24 AM
In the electrical trade I've found that Scotch 88 works well. It's strong and has a good pull strength. At the local electrical supply house it's a bit spendy. Almost $5.00 a role. I've wrapped bundles of wires to isolate the bunch. Automotive and not. At the end you have to remember to put two or three wraps just around the end of the tape only. applied in one running layer at the end it will eventually come unglued. Overlapped at the end it works pretty good. :D

Rodder's Roundtable / RE. 64 Comet MPG
December 14, 2009, 04:59:11 AM
:D  Thanks Guys for all the help/suggestions. It got to the point I picked up on a used/rebuilt Ford carb. After pulling the original I noticed the plastic internal flow adapter was burned/melted so bad it had a hole in it. Replaced the carb, cracked exhaust manifold, vacume choke for electric and WALLA! 22+ MPG. Also found a site that had all the stats on it. It does have self adjusting brakes on all 4 corners. All is good. :D  :D  Thanks again for the help and suggestions. Merry Christmas to all.

This thing has the original 170 cu. in. 6 with a 2 speed auto trans and the 1 bbl carb. After a complete tune up I'm getting 10 1/2 mpg. :( . Did these things come with auto adjust brakes? The pedal is right at the top and hard as a rock, (no power assist) just alot required to stop. I have problems trying to get info elsewhere. Any ideas/help is muchly appreciated. :)

Rodder's Roundtable / 64 Mercury Comet alternator
October 30, 2009, 05:55:27 AM
Got the alternator installed and wired. IT WORKS! I used a 3 wire GM and it works very well. I'd like to thank Frank and all for their wiring tips and criteria.  :)

Picked up some "Deep Creep" penetrating stuff (oil?) going to give it a try in the AM. Sprayed it down to-night, going to go for it in the am. Thanks for the ideas.

Trying to get the 2" stud out of the head. It's rusted pretty good. Tried all I knew but can't get it loose. Any ideas what will penetrate and or lube it up so I can get it out? I'm not looking forward to pulling the head if I don't have to.

Thanks a bunch. it sounds relatively simple so I should be able to handle it.

Picked up a 64 comet 404 the other day. It.s got the original 170 cu. in. I'd like to eliminate the generator and go to an alternator. Years ago I had all the change over criteria but have since lost it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Every day is beautiful, some just a little more than others

Rodder's Roundtable / 38 chevy steering gears
May 29, 2009, 12:45:03 AM
I went thrugh the 220 to 1500 and used some really good polish on the soft metal one. then wash it in acetone so it could be painted with clear lacquer. but if I used a paint bush to help wash it off it scratched it up or dulled the shine. Just started the same process on the 6061 hopeing it turns out better. As long as we're talking about shine, any ideas on what will take mass scratches out of some jeep soft top windows? Everyday is beautiful some just more than others. :D

After polishng this thing at least 10 times then wash it in acetone using a paint brush and have it come out all scratched up I'm about to give up and paint it with black wrinkle paint to match the rest of the dash. I"ll give the 6061 a try or just accept the fact it will look well used and have scratches. I"d like it to resemble chrome.                   Every day is beautiful some just more than others.

Glad to be back, Years ago someone from "the table" sold me some 39 steering gears .(for shipping cost) brain gas, I don't remember the guys name. I thank you immensly. they went right in n are better than the replacement ones from vintage chevy. I love my original steering wheel. (rebuilt of course). Made a dash panel from common 1/4" alu. Wash it with acetone n a paint brush n the scratches are so bad it's ugly. Just got some 6061 plate and going to go for it. I'm not into "buying" my ride. I either make it or it doesn't get it.        Every day is beautiful, some just more than others. :D
