Tom Burkland e-mailed me this picture of the rattle snake they found at the old  Wendover Military Base by Wendover.  It was 9 feet, 1 inch - 97 lbs.  You had best stay on the salt.

He also sent the following:

If you have to kill the snake utilize it!!

DEEP-FRIED RATTLESNAKE

1 medium-sized rattlesnake (3-4 lbs.), cut into steaks
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup cracker crumbs
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (not garlic salt)
1 teaspoon salt
dash pepper

Mix dry ingredients. Whisk milk into beaten egg and use to dip snake steaks.
Then coat them with dry ingredients. Fry, uncovered, in 400 degree oil until brown.

I just like to take their picture and let them go on their way.  This one was on the road up by the Lewis Lodge anasazi ruin where I took Jim and George.  I though it was really large at the time (about 3 feet), but after seeing the snake above it must have just been a baby  :-o .

Wow! That's one big rattler! A few years ago we had about a 5 footer climb up the outboard motor while we were walleye fishing near Pierre So.Dakota.....made for some real excitement with 3 pretty good size guys in a 18' boat  We were able to flip him overboard with an oar.I didn't realize how well they swim.....we were a very long way from shore.I think he was exhausted from swimming....probably a very good thing for us!

Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.
I\'ve traveled a long way and some of the
roads weren\'t paved.

All my thoughts about camping at the bend in the road or anywhere around that area, just went away.  The only good snake is a dead one.

I hear they really like to snuggle with you in your sleeping bag on those cool desert nights

Now there's another good reason to live in Michigan...
I don't mind snakes, but that one is a bit much.

I have been poking around in the desert southwest for 35 years off and on, and have never ran into a rattlesnake while doing it, even though I am always looking for them. I have seen them dead in the road numerous times. The only one I have seen was less than a mile from where I live in Ohio.

I'm just wondering were that snake found enough to eat, to get that big.
Welcome to hell. Here's your accordion.

I'm not too sure that picture was taken in Utah  :?

it looks an awful lot like the picture taken not too far from
Amarillo, at the Turkey Creek gas plant between here and
Fritch TX.

don't mean to suspect the validity of the photo, but my
Supervisor has the same picture.......................  :?

Probably just eats once a year when people come from back east to the salt flats.

I agree with Vance. However, I grew up in the country. I killed lots of snakes and have never seen one that large. I killed a bull snake about 15 years ago that was that long but only weighed around 50 lbs. After his head got smashed.

Maybe you are right.  I don't see any mountains in the background and I've never seen a snake anywhere near that big in Utah.  I've seen some big ones in Arizona.

I haven't been to the old base in Wendover.  I think if someone has they should be able to tell if it was taken there.  There is a big storage tank in the background that could go with an oil facility.

If I get anything else from Tom I'll post.

I don't know if you got my PM or not as I didn't hear back from you.  I almost stayed in Amarillo on my way back to Utah Sunday. The wind was blowing about 100 mph and it was snowing.  The snow stopped west of there and I made it to Grants, NM.

Leon

If that is a 97 pound snake, on the end of a pole that he is holding on what looks like less than halfway up the pole,   That would feel like a 200 pound weight in his right hand.  It doesn't look like he's having to hold up that much weight.  If you blow up the image and look carefully, it looks photoshopped.

rumrumm

That is one of the reasons why my idea of camping is called Holiday Inn. LOL.
