Hi everyone.  As we get closer to B'ville I would like those of you who are coming by here (Blanding) to let me know, so I have some idea how many will be here for logistic planning.  

If you want to go out with us on Wed. (Aug. 10th) you need to get in here at least by the night before on the 9th as we will go out pretty early to avoid the heat.

Also if you PM me I will send you my home and store number so that you could get in touch with me if you are near and having any kind of problems.

If any of you are coming west via I40 throught Albuquerque, NM I would strongly recommend going on west on I40 to Gallup then north to Blanding.  This is one of the prettiest 180 mile drives in the area.  To make it go to Gallup then north on 491 for about 7 miles.  Then west on 264 19 miles to Window Rock.  Turn right at the 2nd light on Indian Route 12 (IR 12).  Go 5 miles to the next light and turn right continuing north on IR12.  This is the really pretty part of the drive.  Further north on IR12 highway 191 will join it at Round Rock.  Go straight on 191 and follow it north until you get to Blanding.  I'm on the south end of town (Purple Sage Trading Post/house next door) next to Clark's Market and across from Super 8 Motel, which would be a good place to stay (435/678-3880).  This drive will take you up into mountain type terrain with large Ponderosa trees and tree covered peaks by the road.  Then you will drop into the desert with huge 500 foot high red buttes at the base of taller mountains.  This is as pretty as Monument Valley.  

Once you get to Albuquerque this is the fastest way to my place, so there is no point in going NW through New Mexico to Farmington and also don't go to Gallup and straight north to Shiprock.  This is a daytime drive.  It is open range with cows and horses, so I wouldn't do it after dark.  If it is after dark you won't see anything anyway, so I would take one of the other routes.

Info for all of you potential B'ville attendees.  Yesterday I drove to the end of the road and took a look at the salt.  There are some fairly large puddles of water out on the salt itself but most of it looks like it is drying out nicely.  We had some strong winds this weekend and with temps in the high 80's and low 90's things are looking good for evaporation.

Good point!  For any newcomers, Saturday night at the bend in the road is the pyrotechnics party.  Most years we have a few VW blocks to sacrifice to the racing gods.  As you know these blocks are made of magnesium and put on quite a show when burning.  If any of you have some wild fireworks that you are afraid to set off in your neighborhood bring them out and join in on the fun.

If you can't find anything and you want to sleep in a tent let me know.  I could bring a tent and some blankets or sleeping bags.

You can usually find a room Sunday night on.  If you keep looking for a room I wouldn't mention that you are a car guy.  You want to appear that you are a "high roller".  They want someone who will spend the day at the slots or tables not out on the salt   .

Hi Sumner,

Sharon and I will be coming out with the '40 and the Mullins trailer in tow. We are leaving the 30th and plan to be in Blanding for your festivities. Should finish booking rooms tonight. I got lucky and got a room passed down from a HAMBer for Friday through Monday nights at the Bonneville Motel.

We're gonna poke along and see the sights and likely will get to Blanding by Saturday or Sunday. We want to work out of there for a few days and see some of the stuff you took us to 2 years ago. We are still negotiating the tourist stops.

Looking forward to seeing the gang and having a great time.
