FYI planishing (AKA hammering on-dolly) works from either side. The rest of the work would be off-dolly (near-dolly or without a dolly). In theory.

I have never made an entire exterior panel though. Take the advice that actually comes from experience. Mine does not, and I have assumed you are working in steel, CK. I can't say a word about aluminum or welding it either. Just lots of times there has to be a response from a lower level person to prompt any response at all from those with higher knowledge and or experience levels.

For all I know, theres a dozen guys on this board who have successfully made prewar hoods. :?: I just like to hear myself talk. :)

Its around zero with minus teens chill. Thats as cold, or more so, than I have seen in the quarter century I've lived here. Brr. F1 guy txtd me yesterday to crack the whip. Said the hood "looks fast and cool" but I refrained from laying the fishbowl idea on him. He is leaning toward no tubs with skinnier tires and boss wants to leave the whole bed bone stock. I am not sure how I will proceed exactly but do know to act like we are behind where we should be.

Put down the sketch for a new painting yesterday but thats all. FWIW the fleetside T in many shades of gold flake was a close second choice for the subject.

I am out to beat on my door edge on the T as I have no access to the school shop today . The bow in the hood side nearest the back edge of the hood will go up or down which leads me to believe that you guys are right, the panel has shrunk along the welds and the back edge is the easiest to move around . I will planish the snot out of it and see what happens . We have a planishing hammer at work also but I may practice a bit before I go hammer happy on the hood side . Thanks for the advice , I think the light just came on ! :)

Working on a commission painting today. It's just blocked in for now, but that color was kicking my behind, Kind of a burnt orange/reddish copper. I think I have the color now, but there's a few hours of work left. I am working from a static picture of the car, he wanted it painted at the local dragstrip, so why not have it making a hard launch! 😄

Thanks for the advice ! I took a hammer to the welds and have both my hood sides sitting flat with no twist at all . I just wish my aim was better as I clipped a couple louvers in the process. Nothing that can not be fixed. I went at my door window ledge yesterday and made good progress . It was bent from someone prying on the edge . stretched and pulled all over . I took a small c clamp and a piece of plate and slowly squished the stretched parts down and it worked very well . There is still some work to do but it no longer looks mangled .

Yeah CK, you can't leave any snot in them things.  :)  Sometimes I even gotta beat the bejeepers out as well. Like last week. My hammer accuracy is akin to my phone keyboard accuracy and / or 10 yard .45ACP groups. I get what I swung for maybe one in five licks.  Helps on one axis to keep elbow against side while doing precise hammering. Glad you got it licked along with the other pesky spot.

Today was another snow day, mainly dangerous wind chills but another round is rolling in as I type. Feel bad for the boss. Just made a burger run though and only main roads are less than sketchy but traffic and bozo amount near normal. I put some time in yesterday on a background. 11x14" this time. :)

Well, sort of and maybe. If I finish and like it and get a chance to show him, probably. According to my plan, not much of the car color will show but I for sure will not use the scheme planned for the A job. No hood blister or roof ribs, so it won't be representational of that project. My picture does use the chop, bob, pan, and meats but thats because it is the image scorched into my brain. Car and background are freehand memories and conjurations and the end result is still fuzzy in my imagination. Thanks!

Sounds like we're working tomorrow. The GTP started slow and made a new noise today.   :-o

That's looking really good, it will be an impressive piece! Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Eye exam today...  time for it , not having problems. New prescript , will need to get glassses built.

THe doc was doing the light reflecting in eye thing with his pivoting  magnifying device... right eye: looking and looking... left eye: looking and looking, back to the right eye.  Then those words: You have cataract forming in the right side. Very small amount, nothing to do now.

The 24 jar set of colors I got has a dandy gold... metallic. Looks like it would do. For this I think Washington Blue with black fenders or use the two Model A greens (not apple) together. The smart thing to do is probably make sure I can pull it off in just black and go from there.

Many thanks  :D

In theory it will look like a warm day.    I definitely hear you on the achievement of a color thats in between colors. Blending colors is kicking my hide because I want that dab of water on the brush and then uh oh try again.  The side and roof on the Ventura picture got colored a half dozen times trying different ways and colors. It snot easy! Looking forward to getting at the car part on mine though. And seeing whats next from your brush.

Put the finishing touches on this today, a commission. The color was a challenge, but the guy didn't want to paint the car black for me! 😄 That color is various combinations of orange, ochre, burnt sienna, cad yellow, red and white. I took some experimentation to get it right. Just gotta frame it, them on to the next, a great pic of a friends Nova after a burnout at the track, looking forward to it.

Feels like you are watching from the guardrail ! Nice work !  8) I used to do oil painting when I was a kid 13 14 yrs old . The teacher would not allow me to paint cars . Did a lot of scenery , Bob Roth style . Have you ever thought of doing a painting of just an engine ?

idrivejunk

That color turned out nice!

I have had the thought to paint a Poncho mill. 8)

Boss wants full day Friday since we missed two, and all weekend is open too. I ain't that gung ho but might do all day Friday.
