2021: What are you doing today

I welded the patch panel on today . A little off dolly work to fix it up between tacks and it is looking pretty good. I stopped for the night and will get back to it on monday when I can get back in the shop. I need to grind down the tacks and then finish the places that didnt get a tack. Just have to remember to grind slow . Last time I did this stuff it was good after welding but puckered in after grinding  :shock: I still have to make 1 hood side and weld the louver panels into them. I also have to make a 1 pc hood top , but I have a couple original hoods to get a basic pattern from . I am thinking I may make the hood top out of aluminum as it seems easier to shape . Any opinions out there as to steel vs aluminum for the hood??? I have no experience with either

Installed a couple new garage door openers. A new radio controller installed on my driveway rolling gate...   Learned a bit about 315mhz and 390mhz on them.  Also about security code changes made in 2005 ( I think)...  I found some universal remotes from Chamberlin and they can be programmed to operate on both frequencies .

I replaced the GDO on "my" side of the garage a couple years ago with a Chamberlain chain drive.  Last year, I replaced the GDO on "her" side with a Chamberlain belt drive. Wow! What a difference. You can hardly hear her door opening it's so quiet. Wish I'd gotten a belt drive for the other one.

C.K. if you have access to a sheet metal roller, either can be done without to much grief. I notice there has been videos pop up about what is supposed to be a copy of Winfields pipe roller. That can be made by scrap pipe in short order. Because you have angles rather than straight dimensions, I would get thick cardboard and try to make a pattern from it before trying anything. Decades ago I had metal clamped in the sheet metal brake. 2 of us held a piece of 4" pipe against the top clamp and but the metal around it. I made a roll pan that way. The alum. you choose to start out with will determine your success. Years ago, dragster bodies were built out of 3003 h 17 temper. I used 5050 h36 but it was harder to work with. If you could find 3003 in 1/16 thickness, that might be pretty good. The thickest body I ever built was .050" thick. I don't know what to think about dent resistance. Sorry I'm not more help.

KB I am not worried about equipment , brake,  shear ,sheet roller , english wheel,  planishing hammer, bead roller , shrinker stretcher , all at my disposal (it will be tough to retire from here one day). I made a 1 pc dragster body for my FED from engine to nose piece out of aluminum years ago but I had a lot of 'artistic freedom' on that one . This hood has to fit with other parts so probably more of a challenge. I never really thought about it but the aluminum could be easier to dent after its on the car. Steel would be easier to weld to for hood hinges and bracing as well . I am still quite a way from making the hood as I have never had the rad shell ,fenders and hood sides mounted all together yet. I used to make some pretty nice tapered round rolled transmission tunnels years ago so I guess ill just have to play around until I get it .

When all else (other ideas) fails, fall back to bumping it in the brake. As far as alumnium, metal shapers prefer it.

Is the whole bimetal corrosion with unlike metals no longer reality? I don't believe I have seen aluminum bolts yet.

Rolled my compressor out to the street yesterday, GT's leaker finally looked down. What with the cold I reckon. Sneaked in a shot of 455 activity too after some visiting. Nowhere near enough ever but always better'n nuthin. On both them things.

Phat46 I appreciate the showing of your example and the advice on top. Mom pointed out an inherited box of craft paints and such, and I left with another handful of brushes, a few secondhand canvas panels the size you use, and some retarder which may help me getting started. I managed to revitalize a near dried out half jug of gesso without too much hand hurt, then applied some and thats dry now. I must say this kind of painting seems like maximum fuss and mess, so pencils will stay sharp and pens occasionally wet. And theres a nice juicy brand new set of watercolor cakes itching to get tried. Mixing quick gratifying works in along with more laborious ones is probably best. Just lazy, not in the mood but starting ought to take care of that.

Got some unexpected shop time today and welded up the rest of the door patch . I think it went well. I will need to do a bunch of panel beating yet but the problems are in the centre of the door not near the patch . I think I can match the bead pretty close by using a flat chisel and beating the patch panel close enough for a skim of pudding at the bottom . When I folded the edges over , one side moved in a little narrower than the original door but a bit of mig and grinder should fix it ok . I have a rather bent up door on the passenger side where the door goes in to the bottom of the window .  If I can get a hammer in there that will be tomorrows job . It feels good knowing I have now got all the rusted out areas repaired  :D

Thanks, I did same. Might have found something I'm slower at than bodywork. :shock:

Pearl effect is going to be a challenge but I think the colors will do it. What is tripping me up is needing to transfer the sketch lines again after a layer. Part of working opaque I reckon but wish I had a better way. I honestly don't know why I always choose to work small but this piece is 4.5 x 6". Probably an impatience / frugality thing, but it sure don't help much. :?
