I posted this on the land racing board but I thought I would also post again here as several of the rrt members have helped with the race car over the last few years.  I will try to update Hooley's progress as I get news.

Hooley had shifter problems on his first pass.  This caused the clutch to go bad when the motor over reved.  The motor seems to be fine. This has happened twice before and the motor was fine. But the first two times the throw out bearing, not the clutch broke.  Hooley was a able to continue making passes, but he was unable to disengage the clutch.   A push start, pull it into gear,  and then shift without clutching.  Today it was the clutch not the throw out bearing that broke.  Something new this year.

I got on the computer and I found a speed shop in Salt Lake that had the clutch stuff and they are staying open until they get there.  I made some calls and found a machine shop that will surface the flywheel this evening.  They should be back at Wendover later this evening.  A night's rest, then put the car together in the morning.  I think they will be back in line by noon.

I found the machine shop by making calls from my NSRA Fellow Pages.  I found an NSRA member at a car show somewhere around Salt Lake.  He walked around the car show asking people where there was a machine shop that would do what we needed today.  Somebody told him about the shop I called.  I am just amazed at what can be done 1500 miles away with a computer and a cell phone.

Wow, the power of hotrodders! Gotta love a happy ending. I hope Hooley and the team does well this year.

Do you know if the 1149 B/STR team from Calgary is down there this year? Now that I don't live there I'm out of touch with them.

The car was not preregistered and I do not remember seeing it in any of the photos I have seen.  Don is going to be on the salt this year and is supposed to stop by Hooley's pit.  I guess this means Don is feeling better.

I just talked to Sum on the phone.  They got the parts and the machine work done but it was late in the night before they got back to Wendover.  They are getting a late start this morning but they are not planning to run again until tomorrow (Monday) morning.

Norris broke his record with the white Studebaker truck and backed it up this morning.  As soon as they get through tech they will put in a taller gear and go again.

I have heard that the current motor, which is the small motor I believe, made 1200 hp on the dyno.  I know that he has a monster motor built for the truck but I do not think it is the one he is currently running.  He has a least 2 motors for the truck with him.  I think he went 211MPH this morning on his back up run.

Sum says they have Hooley's Studebaker back together and that they will get in line behind the record cars to make another pass first thing in the morning.

Thanks, John. I was wondering how things were going for them.

I'll be watching for news of a record from your camp now!  :D

Gee John you didn't make the trip either this year. It's hard sitting back at home knowing that it's happening now isn't it.
Next year hopefully for me now.
I maybe from down under but I know which way is up.
Oh hell there goes another head rush.

Latest update.

Hooley made another run early this morning.  The front air dam broke and he started scooping up salt.  He shut it down in the four mile and had a top speed of 228 MPH.  A good shake down run.  They are fixing the air dam now and evaluating the motor as the data recorder showed some funny numbers.  I am hoping it was just a malfunction in the data recording system.  Go Hooley.

I needed to clear up some information on Norris Anderson.  He is running his big AA motor.  Yesterday he backed up his record from Saturday and then ran again later and went 216 MPH or about that.  This morning he did his back up run at 221 MPH for and membership in the 200 MPH club.  I am not sure of the numbers but they are close.  I think his new record is about 218 MPH.  To be a member of 200 MPH you must break a record over 200 mph.  In Norris's class there was not a record originally and so the 200 MPH Club had set a minimum mph to qualify for the club.  Norris had set a record in the past over 200 but today he exceeded the minimum for the 200 MPH Club.  Very fast for a stock bodied Studebaker truck.   Congratulations Norris.

Dad called me a little while ago from Gary Weldon's pit, he's having a great time, he and mom got to Wendover Sunday.
1149 is currently sitting in Standard short an engine. Things just didn't come together.

Thanks for the update, Mike. Maybe things will be better next year! There's a chance that Karen and I might drive down for Speed Week next year. She actually suggested it the other night! We'd take her car as the Essex will be in pieces by then. I'm crossing my fingers!

They found some unrepairable suspension damage today.  This may relate to why the car set lower, and the front air dam got into the salt like a grader blade.

The good news is that Hooley will be home for the HAMB Drags.
