Favorite Events and How you Get To Them

After writing about our scenic drive up to Springfield, MO and back, I thought I would start a new thread about your favorite events you go to each year and how you get to them. Where the best places to eat are at along the way and what you see along the way.

With the newest changes underway to the NSRA, this may be my last time to drive 11 hours to Louisville, but we go up 65 in Alabama through Nashville and Bowling Green. There is a great place to eat at called Stan's Restaurant along 65 South of Nashville at exit 46 in Columbia, TN. If you like country cookin' like Cracker Barrell, then this is the place for you.

The Bunny Run in Jackson, TN: We like to drive South when leaving there and go through Holley Springs, MS (George Poteet country) and see all of the old homes along the way. This last April, the Dogwoods were blooming all over Jackson, TN and South. Lots of horse farms along the way also. There is a place to eat at in Jackson, TN called the Old Country Store at the Casey Jones Museum that makes Stan's not even be in the contest.

My favorite event happens in November and it is in Crossett, AR. The Klassy Kruzers put on their Fun Run there and it is a great event to go to. The town of Crossett is very small and it is built around the paper mill. If the mill was not there, the town would not be there. There are two motels in the town and the event is at one of them (Lakewood Inn). For the price of registration, you get more back: They feed you twice and you get many chances to get door prizes. Also you are treated fine by the members of the best club in the world.

We went to Crossett  around 94 or so w/ our friends from Hernando, Ms. I remember it was real hot, July or so. We went over to one of the club members home shop one night & he was rodding a 34 Ford fordor that had been a fake Bonnie & Clyde car. He said he used up all the lead in Arkansas fixing the bullet holes!

They moved the Crossett event to the first full weekend of November, so it isn't hot there any more. The host hotel is laid out very nice to have a car show at. It is a pre-'67 event.

My favorite is Goodguys Indy.  A lot of us on the board seem to meet up there every year and I enjoy seeing everyone as much as the event.  I thought I was going to miss this year and go to Bowling Green instead but we changed back to Indy.  The rain we have had the last few years has taken a lot of the fun out of it but it is still my favorite.  Lots of cars, good friends, and drag racing.  That is a combination that is hard to beat.

Of course Bonneville is at the top of the list but that is in a little different category.

That's why I like the multi-day events because if it rains some, maybe the whole event won't be a washout.

I have registered for Goodguy Nashville this year, but will have to see if I get to go to it because I was told on Wednesday that I was in another layoff. 3 1/2 months this time on this job. So I am searching again. Like I said back in January, when I was in a layoff after being with a company for 15 years, at least I have more than just drafting to look for in a job. I also have computer desktop support experience. Hopefully I can make it to Louisville this year.

Having the time to take off and travel to these events is what I need. When traveling across the countryside you see so many places that would be great to stop at if you had the time.

Up there in Springfield, MO they seem to have it all. Great places to eat at and if you can't find it in Springfield, then you don't need it! As my wife and I were leaving that city, we saw a tack store with a lot of horse gear. So I went down to the next exit and turned around and went back to it. I had never been to that Southern end of town before and what I found was a whole section with som restaraunts that we have to try next time we are there.

Maybe we will be able to make it to the large swap meet in Springfield August 21-23, 2009. A few years back two of my friends went to it and said that it was great.

Picture this (if you have never been to Springfield, MO before): Whatever you want to eat, it's there from BBQ to oriental to pizza to you name it. Then on top of that, there is an icecream parlor on just about every corner! Then after you get through eating all of that food, there are fitness places there also!

Maybe we will be able to make it to the large swap meet in Springfield August 21-23, 2009. A few years back two of my friends went to it and said that it was great.

That is an excellent swap meet and the same weekend as the HAMB Drags which is located in Joplin, MO less then one hour south of Springfield.  Most of the folks that some into town for the HAMB Drags hit the Springfield swap meet on that Thursday or Friday....or BOTH!

Give some thought to making a whole weekend event outta both.

A favorite of mine is the Hot Rod Power Tour.  I've done 6 long hauls in the past and we're getting ready to head out for our 7th.  This year it's Madison to Bristol.  I wanted to take the 54 but because of a bunch of family stuff going on this year, I wasn't able to get everything done to it that it needed, so I'll be driving my S10.  Not exactly a hot rod, but at least I'll get to go and get some decent mileage on the way.

Yep.  That year was the first of two with the 68 Torino convertible.  Did '01 in the T bucket, '03 and '04 with the Torino, '05 with the S10, '07 with the 54, and '08 with the HHR.

I have always liked the Springfield Mo. area. Like 40chevy said, if they dont got it you dont need it.  Any kind of food you want, shopping malls for the wife ect. We went this year just to go to quilt shops for my wifes busness.  Didnt enter the show because we were only going to be there a couple of hours. Of course we were there for the rain showers.  I really like the fair grounds. If you are not into power parking there is lots of shade. Thought about not going to any more NSRA shows but Spring field is so nice. Will proably just spectate & not enter. I just cant agree with this 1980 thing. I have had a thing about the NSRA & the numbers game they play about how many members they have. I am 14 of those members. Thats how many NSRA memberships I have.
