Rodder's Roundtable / Real Hot Rod Help????
September 27, 2005, 08:46:18 PM
I have always considered a hot rod a small car with a big engine.  My first taste was a 396 bbc in a 58 impala  from there I progressed to bbc in vega, chevy 11, (they are not a duce) 425 cadi in a vw and my current rides 383 sbc in a 43 willys pu and a 496 bbc in a 57 Chevy. now I want to build my first real hamb hot rod.

In my shop there is a 260watt mig with bottle, a tig, a buzz box, oxy welder and a plasma cutter.  80 gallon compressor, 50 gallon compressor and a funky little paint booth that you all helped me build. This is just the big stuff many more tools that matter.  Any Kinght is welcome any time.  Now I want to build my first:  "HOT ROD"

After all that my real question is?   What makes the most since for a novice builder to cut his teeth on?  It will not be the first, I hope, nor the best, just want to start and not get in over my head.  Want no top, roaster or modified.  Have a 413, several sbc, 63 Chrysler rear, two 10 bolt Chevy, two 4sp a couple of 3sp, 3.8 Buick v6.

Where do I start easy project, so I can get the experience and later build what I want later?

Rodder's Roundtable / Introduction
May 20, 2004, 09:54:00 PM
Hi guess I have been lurking and getting great advice, on here long enough without introducing myself.  My name is Tom I am a mortgage broker in Fresno, CA.  My projects are an 82 Corvette (even though the CA dmv has it as an 83 model and first year sold as 83, even though Chevrolet never made an 83 Vette) the 350 has been bored and stroked to 383 with 202 heads and lots of other goodies.  The suspension has been updated to late modern Z51 with neoprene bushings and larger sway bars; the 700R has a shift kit and a different torque converter.  I also have a 61 International Scout with a sbc and Dana 44 running gear.  In the wings is a 57 Chevy not sure what it is going to look like.  I live on 8 acres a few miles east of town with a great mountain view when it is clear, 10 or 20 days a year.  I have a three car shop and a barn big enough to hold at least 6 cars.  Thanks for all the great tips on my lawn mower problem, it is running great by the way and I still do not know what went wrong or how it was fixed just followed some of your great hints.

I have a 6.5hp Tecumseh OHV lawn mower.  It ran fine on Sat when I mowed the front lawn.  On Sunday when I started the back (too much yard work in one day keeps me away from my projects) I used the primer pump like always it fired ran for a few seconds and quit.  I tried again same thing ran until the primer gas ran out.  It has a feul bowl on the bottom of the carb with the main jet holding the bowl on.  I cleaned  the jet and bowl as a dirty jet has been the cause before.  Same result.  I removed the carb and cleaned it seems to have all passages working fine,  Drained the gas tank cleaned it, reassembled the mower same result.  Any help or comments world be appreciated.
