Ford 3G alternator

Bought one on Ebay and doesn't work. Does anyone know how to test the various components so I can figure out exactly which component is faulty? Thanks. Dave

You might try Autozone for a test, that might tell you something, also try net search, theres alot out there about Alt repair.

there are tons of these.. how about a number off the case...  i also test things at autozone.. but they and i will need a part number off of it ...

some of the regulators .. will only work with a digital dashboard.. there are a lot of variables...

there is a pointer on the regualtor showing which screw to touch to ground with a test lead to bypass the regulator for a full field test....


i have had problems that the power to the A wire was not enough do to a battery leak onto the wire ..   but you don't have a leaking battery onto a tiny cut in the insulation over behind the battery...(the yellow wire) ...

if yo can post the number i can find the test points online.. or out of the book at my right elbow...from   http://transpo-usa.com/     many of the suppliers will not sell to the public...

a= battery positive
s = the stator output     a/c voltage used for?
I = the wire that goes to the indicator lamp that has switched voltage on the other side

Thanks Wayne. The only numbers are on the reg which is F4Zu-10316-AC which is a # F795 on Transpo. No #'s on case. I have done numerous searchs and haven't found anything on how to test actual reg etc. Want to know exactly what is wrong with this unit. Is it the diodes , reg or?

if you go back and check the other links there is a link to test the regulators at the botom of some of the pages...

after testing the wires i outlined earlier.. there is the ground the screw that holds the regulator on test...

that grounding of that screw bypasses the voltage regualtor circuts...

if it goes over 15 volts in a few seconds  the diodes and brushes are good....  if it does not  go over 15 volts in that short legnth of time something is wrong...

the alternator rebuilding parts companys are tightly controling who gets to purchase parts...    i cannot buy parts direct any more. you have to have a credit account with them... and be approved by 3 other rebuilders in your area so you dont step on anybody elses toes...

I'll have to install it back in the car and do the grounding test. All the rebuild parts are readily available on Ebay for a decent price. Thanks again.
