Can anyone tell me if the neutral safety switch on a Ford Contour automatic is on the shifter or inside the trans?  I'm having a problem with one.

it is not inside the tranny.

there is a MLPS on the trans.. not sure if it serves as the neutral saftey switch too.

it should...
prolly have to pull the air cleaner stuff to get at it.

Thanks.  I've had intermittent trouble for a long time with sudden failure to start.  Shift the transmission back and forth a couple of times and it'll fire right up.  Now nothing.  I was hoping to just bypass the switch temporarily, but I'll bet with the MLPS that just won't be possible?

My daughter had an Escort that would act up ,she would take the console lid off and trip the switch manually. Don't know if Contour is the same .

Couldn't hurt to look inside the console just to be on the safe side.  I haven't priced it yet but if it's the MLPS (Manual Lever Position Sensor, what a mouthful!) it might be pricey as it is a dealer-only part.  When I told the parts house people (even NAPA) what I was looking for each and every one of them said "the WHAT?"

Did you look at www.napaonline.com?  It's listed under backup light switch and also as neutral safety switch.  I guessed at the year and entered 1997.  Came up with Napa # NS5593.

I have learned that it's easier to look the parts up myself at home (either Napa or O'reilly.  Most majors have online shopping) than to rely on last week's burger flippers to find something for me.  If you go in the door with the part number in your hand they don't have to work as hard.

my 2 cents.
