I have a problem with this one, it doesn't work. At all. It has power in the right places, and the sender is hooked up right, with new wires, twisted like the instructions. Any one with any insight?

It's broke?  That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject...

A little more help.  Not only is it broke,  but I don't know what's wrong with it.
Some days it\'s not worth chewing through the restraints.

I don't know if I'm much help but I have a VDO programable speedo in my 34 and I accidently blew it up when I first installed it. I had it temporarily wired up and drove it for a few days. I then went to make it more permanent and stupidly found what I thought was a good ground. I found out later that night it was a ground behind my lights. When I turned the lights on the speedo went crazy, then stopped. Luckily it had a few Kms on the odometer so it was replaced under waranty ( I didn't confess to blowing it up myself   ) I did notice when I got the new one that by just connecting up the power the needle jumped slightly. I assume that was a good indication that the movement and detector circuitry as working OK. I'm not certain if the Classic ones work the same. I have mine sitting waiting to go into the 37 so I'm not much help there. I have also heard the senders are not the same. I heard the Classic senders send a square wave as opposed to the others that are a sine wave. I find it hard to believe that you can get a square wave out of a flying magnet past a coil but I may be missing something. Even so, I would also expect a pulse of either type to be suitable as a trigger. I would get any old sender and hook it up to the speedo and spin it by hand and eliminate which end is faulty...The speedo itself or the sender. I can get hold of a Cro from work if I have the same problem....See if you can get hold of one to test out the sender. Just by spinning the sender in your hand, the Cro should show the pulses ( I recall 8 pulses per rev)...good luck

Have you ever wondered how your mother knew enough about people like me to warn you about us?

Classic told me that you must be sure to have a dedicated ground and and a dedicated power source.

I have the dedicated power supply and ground. I talked to Classic at the nats, and he told me I needed a twisted pair on the sender wires to keep out spurious signals. I did that, and still no workie. I hate to pull the speedo unless it's really necessary, it will require tearing apart the whole dash, AC and most of the wiring. Speedo installs from the rear of the dash. I'll see if I can come up with a sender to experiment with.

What's a Cro? ... An oscilloscope?

Yeah Bruce, I'm also showing my age...It means Cathode Ray Oscilloscope but in these days its more likely a digital cro...not a cathode ray in sight.

put a dvom on the sender and spin the wheels, should make ac voltage if the sender is ok.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it\'s still on my list

Im bettin theres nuttin  you can do cept send it back.. Its shot.... When using twisted pair the best way is twisted pair with a ground wire and only ground one end of it. That gets rid of the spurrious componets that may affect the operation.. I usually check to see if its grounded at the trans end then leave the ground unhooked at the speedo end. Wanna see how this stuff works ? stop by and ill fire up a thousand watts of rf in the radio room and we can set off some stuff in the house if i do it right LOL... In reality its the same principal just different voltages and such but id be more concerned with shielding with a ground than a dedicated ground or power line..
My nickle...

Ok Joe,Dave finally convinced me you were right all along.

I called classic today, and it looks like it is shot. They said send it back and they'll check it out. Easier said than done.  It's going to take several hours to get it out.
