They do nothing. Or if your a believer they do a lot

The ones the cber's use is a coil in between the antenna that adds length. Its not the best design but it can take a shorter antenna and make it look longer and work like the old long whip antennas. The ones that we use in ham radio usually have an alligator clip that can be moved for different bands and they make a motorized one also.. Enuff info for today
