Sounds like most people are using Drill dr and are pretty happy with it, but I saw a neat website posted about hand sharpening, I might try to do some.

I learned to sharpen them as a kid too. All I had then was cast off junk, so I had to sharpen them to use them.

I worked for several tight * employers over the years and had to learn how to do it by hand too. The "Two-Flat" method described in that link is how I have always done it. I didn't know it had a name though...

Learned to sharpen by hand years ago.Keeping the angle the same length is the hardest part. Once you learn that, you've got it made. I did here the "drill doctor" was pretty sharp (no pun intended)though.  oldmanolds
GETTING OLD SUCKS..BUT IT SURE BEATS THE ATERNATIVE.     www.stophd.org

It's even more fun if you use old coat hangers for welding rod, GPster

So whst grade of coat hangers do you use Joe? The good ones from Dillards, or the cheap ines from Walmart? Do you straighten them first, or just use them bent. I smell a tech post here.

for my dirt bike tanks I would use the walmart plastic ones. (haven't tried it yet.)

I've always used drycleaner cast offs and always straightened them out for aesthetic reasons. For the longest time I used to unwind and then straighten them till I finally decided is was worth the loss just to torch off the connection part and live with the loss. Course frequently I would pick up the pieces and melt them together to use them up.

Sure glad there was finally something Techy I could contribute to.

I bet I've tried a zillion times over the past 45 years to hand sharpen a drill bit, sometimes to just get me out of a jam on a Sunday, when nothing is open.  Maybe 10 bits have actually come out acceptable.  I know there is a knack to it, but I can't figure it out.

Sooooooooooo,  I finally went out and bought a Drill Dr a couple months ago. It took some getting used to, especially the two step thing, but at least I now have a means to sharpen my old bits, with some degree of success.

yes i hyave a magnifier lens already. Its the darkness of the shield thats messing me up i think.... ive got an auto darkening lense but i dont think its dark enuff and its bright enuff to not allow me to see where im welding.
Barney

ps: ive used coat hangers a lot but a good gas welding rod is the way to go. Ya coat hangers work but the gas rod makes nicer welds.
