My daughter's VW Rabbit, a very low mileage 78 model bought new by my folks had some problems a while back.

Turned out to be a bad fuel pump relay.

Anyway, it's a weird little car to say the least.
Points ignition and vacuum controlled fuel injection.

Somewhere along the line I gave the little brass mixture screw on the back side of the throttle body a crank thinking it might clear up a rough idle.
The idle was cured with new points etc.

What I need is a base setting for the mixture screw.
I have a manual and the only thing it shows on this subject is how to set the throttle body stop, which is correct.

My manual, a Haynes, doesn't have the recommended so many turns out from the bottom on the mixture screw.

I'm hoping someone has this info.

The car runs pretty good once it's warm, but cold starts, it doesn't want to keep running until there's some heat in the head.

The cold start - or 5th as some call it - injector is working ok.

Where's Dr Chop when you need him?  As I remember, he said he has owned 10 or 12 VW Rabbits.

The brass screw you refer to is idle air only. These FI systems on early VWs are finicky & will not tolerate any trash or water in fuel. Use a good injector cleaner as in Chevron w/techron & change fuel filter at least once a year or 15k miles. There is a part next to oil filter called a warm up regulator which acts like a choke by changing fuel pressure according to engine temp. When it goes bad , it causes the problems you described. This fi system is made by Bosch. Parts may still be available thru VW suppliers. Hope I have been of help.
