REbabbit bearings?

has any one here had bearing shells rebabbited , plated or whatever it is called?

Crank shaft bearings ( new, fresh) for a Crosley motor are very hard to locate.  Crosley uses an insert type bearing for rods and mains.  I've seen NOS main bearing set sell on ebay for 300+ dollars

I have made no calls or email to places like Egge yet.  

I figured I would run this past you folks first just for grins to see if ya have done the rebabbit on insert type bearings

I've never heard of rebabiting an insert bearing. Nothing else out there comes close on size? It might be possible to resize the rod to fit another bearing.

I worked in a machine shop for several years theres no way they can plate or rebabbit the insert bearings. The old bearing is contaminated and it would be very hard to plate up 1-thou or so on a bearing.I would search around some clubs and try to find a source.A good parts man and machine shop might be able to get you a set of bearings that will work.

We have found Thermo king compressor bearings work for rods... a bit narrower , but work.

Main bearings are the problem.  Couple of the mains are unique , none around are close to correct fit.

This way is backwards but could you have the crank hard chromed to build it up a little and reuse the old bearings? GPster

The second link has  some interchange part numbers for main bearing sets.If you have no luck let me know what year and engine ID  you have and what size mains you need and I will check around in the Bay Area  for you.I have been Drag Racing since 1970 and know alot of engine builders and great machine shops in this area .Would be glad to help.

thanks for the info links to the Crosley Club sites.  I've been a Crosley Club member for 10 yrs.  

We often discuss the engine bearings issuue in the club room chats. We can get the bearings made new. The minimum number of bearings manufactured and set-up dollars needed are very high.  As I recall 5,000 of each bearing set (1 crank journal) was the minimum.  

The crank mains use 3 different designs of bearings. The thrust bearing , front bearing is different, the other 3 sets are the same on the 5 main crank shaft.

And I always thought a "trick" crosley was one with an outragious engine swap. For that kind of money a "Trick" one would be a one with a re-built motor. Maybe you could have a block "line-bored" with the bearings and the do the deal like the do to put 400 cranks in 350 blocks. But then I get in trouble making suggestions. GPster

Tony if I remember corectly the Homelite outboard motor was a Crosley turned on end. If this is true there is a guy on ebay that has some main bearings for them. Don't know but it might work.

They use Babbit Bearings in old Tractor engines-I used to know a guy who could pour his own. I would try Old Tractor Forums and see if someone can help-

yep ,

a bit high priced IMHO.  might be able to bargain a little I guess.
