We just got home from our winter hide out and I have a question on a distributer gear. The thing is a 351-W and it keeps eating the gear off the dizzy. So we changed cams, knocked the teeth off again, changed oil pumps, knocked the teeth off again.any ideas? It will run all day, just get on her and it lets go.
This is on the youngest kids Monarch(he's broke and going to school).
thanks

You sure the distributor is going in all the way? Does this happen to be a roller cam? Any abnormal wear on the old oil pump? Oil pump drive shaft ok?

what metal is the gear & cam shaft?

Bronze gear , billet gear , cast iron gear?

What distributor?  As enjenjo asked , is it all the way in the engine?

A big oil pump would / should twist the pump drive shaft first, not take out the dizzy gear

Thanks for the help,
The pump was O.K. but I had him change it and the shaft too.
It only takes the teeth off when he's realy on it.
The thing just started doing this ,we rebuilt the motor a long time ago.
The first time it did it,we put in a new cam(not a roller)and a dizzy I had on the shelf.
First time he hit 3rd it took the teeth off.
changed the pump and shaft,(pump looked O.K. but changed it any way)
got another dizzy out of the barn,it ran good,He got on it and it took off some teeth again.
Now the gears are all stock from ford, plain steel not bronze.
Do you think the cam could be walking  back a little?
any other ideas?
Thanks Russ&Irene

It would help if we could see the broken gear.
