49 Chevy Gas Tank! Upgrade sending unit?

My son had to get a gas tank for his 49 other one was rusted out, hes planning on a 12 volt system the tank has a 6V sending unit, can he continue to use this sending unit or will he have to upgrade to a 12V? He is also keeping the orignal gas guage.

If he is keeping the original guage, he has to stay with an original sending unit, and use some type of voltage dropping unit to run it on 12 volts.
