I'm pulling a 700R4 from a 84 Camaro and was wondering if it's worth rebuilding or if I should just gut it and use the case for mocking up mounts.  It has the earlier pump that failed, is it as simple as putting in the newer pump when it is rebuilt or are there other major differences?

A pump can be rebuilt  with more vanes can be installed.  10 vanes is all that is needed.  An early  7 vane pump  works  too.

the 1984 unit is fine ,  updates are easy if a person has easy access to the parts.  If you buy the upgrades the money adds up fast   These trannys ran many trouble free miles in OE setup.

If you are building more horse power, a 1988 700-r4 and newer would be a better idea.  Easier to calibrate too

I got the pan off and there's quite a bit of metal in it, and the fluid is badly burnt.  I'm beginning to wonder if this one is worth the trouble.

sounds like it is a unit for set-up status now.

I've supplied a few old tranny cases to local rodders for setup use.
