I realized the little motor I had for my pulling tractor was going to be a LONG time in the building. I wanted a motor to put in "for now". Thrusday I pulled 2 more of the Mercruisers out of a boat. I expected # 1 to have water inside since the air cleaner was off. The boat was outside for years.

Motor # 1 - When I pulled the exhaust manifold off water ran from all 4 ports. I pulled the plugs. All holes were full. When I drained the pan it was completely full of water. The amazing thing is I don't see any cracks in the block. I took the oil pan off to check it out. No rust inside. Everything looked clean except the milk shake mix stuck to the pan. After soaking the cylinders 3 days it now rotates. I guess I will hook up the starter and spin it over with fresh oil and filter and see if it builds oil pressure.

Motor # 2 - I was hoping it was dry inside. Pulling the exhaust looked good. Pulled the plugs and still good. I pulled the oil plug and got a couple gallons of antifreeze. The antifreeze tested between +5 and -10. These motors have a very weird water pump driven off the camshaft. The water is kept from the motor by 2 lip seals with a drain between them. I saw the drain had a sheet metal screw in it. That tells me the first seal was known bad. I think the antifreeze cam through the 2nd seal also. I filled the block with water and it didn't drain out overnight. This one rotated without soaking. I just filled it with clean oil and a new filter. I am going to try to spin it tomorrow.

Is there anything else I need to do before spinning them?

My plans - 1)  Turn them over with the starter without the plugs in them. I still have a little ATF in all cylinders. Check oil pressure. Check for spark   2) Put in the plugs and repeat.  If that works I will give them a shot of gas.  The carb shafts are frozen so I won't be able to do much until those are addressed.
