I have a friend with a 37 Ford sedan. Normal 350-350 combo. He says it has the original x member and a mustang 2 front end and I believe 9" rear. He wants to change to auto overdrive. Which is the best trans to use that is similar in size to the 350? He's non computer also. What will need to be done to the trans mount? Shorten driveshaft also? Thank you.

Either one will work. Both will require notching the X member. The 200R4 less than the 700R4. The mount on the 700 is about 3" further back than a T350, the 200 mount is about 5" further back. Both can use the t350 drive shaft yoke, but the drive shaft needs to be shortened for the 200. Neither one needs a computer, but both have a lock up convertor. You can rewire them internally to lock up the convertor with just one wire. Both need a TV cable, adjustment is critical.
Welcome to hell. Here's your accordion.

Chassis Engineering makes an X-member modification kit for the 700R4 in a 35-40 Ford. It's a little pricey but looks like it would be worth it for those who aren't builders.

Putting a 700R4 in there is not a pretty sight. I just removed a 700 from my '40 coupe. The mods were poorly done and the X was severely weakened. I replaced it with a T-56 6 speed and redid the upper and lower rails.
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail...but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying. "Wow...that was fun!"
