I just helped change a 5.7 engine. Seems the original was 94 but the new is a 96.
We have a miss and the owner was told we need to change the computers. Are these computers compatible?
I did have to change the distributor pig tale to run the 96 engine.
I do know that he 94 does not have a crank position sensor in the timing cover but the 96 does. What kind of problems will that cause?
Thanks,
Don

I think your 96 would be the Vortec engine! You should have a strange looking dissy cap and the CAM sensor is in there!

I would think you would need a computer for a 350 vortec to time the fuel injection! I think the vortec was a mass air flow engine, the 94 did not have that, it was a MAP engine.

I missed the Camero part! Is it a TPI injection? Thats probely got MAF sensor! In 94.

I got truck on the brain!%^#^(*&*

Id this an LT1 engine? It's the right year range. Summit has a retrofit 96 style ignition that will fit the 94. 95 and newer had an improved ignition, but it is not compatible with the 94 and older computer,

I will check it out.  The differences that are apparent are the lack of a crank position sensor on the 94. The 96 has a ignition control module next to the coil, the 94 has none. The pigtail to hook up the optispark distributor is different on the two but it hooks to the main harness the same.  This is a 96 engine we installed. We just need to make it work with the 94 harness.
So I am wondering if I have to change the front cover, cam gear and distributor to go back to the 94 system to get it to work?

I'm not sure, I've never gone that way. I believe there is a difference in the drive tang, but I may be wrong.

I have a spare computor for a '94 LT1.
LT1 has Opti-spark distibutor. Hidden behind the cam driven water pump.

on an LT1 92 up engines with Optispark...

if you have a misfire... stop...

replace the IGNITION COIL FIRST..  they are fairly cheep.. 25 to 50 bucks depending on the brand.. takes 20 minutes ..

please also wire brush the ring terminals that share the mounting bolts with the coil bracket or the bolts next to the coil/module bracket..
thats the G111 ground location for parts of the fuel injection and ignition system

they leak HIGH Voltage thru the sides and will not create enough voltage to properly jump the gap at the spark plugs before they arc thru the plastic and varnish to ground at the coil leaving you with a weird misfire..

.......

one might also want to remove and clean the other various ground connections on the engine...

why .. because if you don't have ground..  you won't have enough electrons to properly operate the system properly..

Quote from: "rooster"Here's some nice wiring diagrams for a 94 and 96 LT1.

Well,
What I can get from the 94 and 96 diagrams is that all four pin outs on the distributors are the same. They are used for different signals to the computers between the two. So the 96 distributor should  work properly with the 94 computer. Correct me if I am wrong. One other thing that comes to mind is that there are two plug wires wired tied together behind the tensioner mechanism.  I wonder if there is some kind of cross fire going on between the two from bad wires?
AND thanks to all for the information I am getting.
