Wondering why a starter on a Ford 460 would start the engine fine when cool and then while the engine is running the starter gets rel hot.

If you shut the engine off then it won't start till it cools off.

Its in a class C van chassis style motorhome.

The starter has been replaced as has the solenoid.

Other possible causes ?

exhaust leaks on or infra red heating of the starter  by the exhaust system. or block..

you did not mention what year... as its probably a fuel injected model.. have you changed the fuel filter lately?? some are inline.. some have a screw cap to replace the element..

can you find a vacuum port and hook up a vacuum gauge to it...  without disconnecting something.. or adding a Tee and a short section to tap into it  without disconnecting it while testing.. then slowly accelerate the engine and verify the manifold vacuum is NOT DROPPING as you accelerate the engine slowly..

is there a chance that the solenoid is staying Engaged and spinning constantly?? that will sure get it hot...

up thru 84 thru 95 models.. run a KOEO and a KOER test...

96 up .. run an OBD2 scan tool.. and look at the exhaust sensor waveform.. make sure its swinging from 0.2 to 0.8 volts constantly at a steady 2500 RPMs..

lastly.. do you have a digital volt meter???

do the wires have clips on the ends..

hook one to the negative battery post.. the other to the engine block.. set meter to 20 volts DC scale.. crank engine.. you should get less than 1.0 volt.. if you get more.. then the ground cable is either TOO small or its loose...

do a similar test on the positive.. from the positive battery post to the starter post..   again crank the engine...  less that 1.0 volts..

one these 2 posts.. you might get slightly more..  post what you get...

Clarification needed.

It wont start?

the engine cranks , will not fire up?

The engine does not crank at all?

The engine cranks very slowly?

Clarification. Won't start as in starter will not engage at all when hot.
