I'm trying to by-pass a duel tank switching valve on a 88 f150 (5.0) to get me back on the road. Can anyone tell me if this type of connection can be made from tubing ?

The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it\'s still on my list

i stay up all night just waiting for questions like this...

something like this.... is what its going to take... to go from duck bill latching ford fuel lines ...

http://dormanproducts.com/p-10635-800-154.aspx

for 5/16

http://dormanproducts.com/p-30437-800-155.aspx

for 3/8

http://dormanproducts.com/p-12460-800-158.aspx

for 1/4 inch

here is the link for a pair... of them.. 5/16 and 3/8

http://dormanproducts.com/p-12461-800-159.aspx

there are also short versions with a 90 degree bend for repairing fuel sending units...

http://dormanproducts.com/p-8566-800-229.aspx

http://dormanproducts.com/p-24799-800-230.aspx

hope this helps....

they can be cut and connected with conventional compression fittings...

i don't think i would try to flare them... they have already been worked.. might be a little hard...

now i can get some sleep....

I'm sure thats a nice tool, it is pricie for me! Those tubes with the male ends, can thay be cut down and silver soldered together, maybe slid a sleave over the soldered joint and resoldered again at the ends for strength?

I'm just trying to keep from splicing into those lines, but I would if I had to.

Thanks guys

rooster...  i seem to recall that fords with dual tanks just switched on one pump at a time...   running a dead head against the pump that was off .. stopping it with the pumps check valve...

the plastic device you have pictured is the fuel filter assembly...

it uses a open paper element and an oring ... to seal the plastic cap that unscrews..

there are 2 different height fuel filter elements that are possible with that...

here is what one might look like...

http://contentinfo.autozone.com/znetcs/product-info/en/US/chl/FF621/image/4/

are you having a problem with one of the tanks... and need to plug a line??? so fuel does not pour out..    or is your filter element inside the plastic device clogged..     you should probably use an oil filter wrench to loosen it... after you wipe it down to remove excess dirt from the exterior...

you can just remove the element..  but you take a HUGE chance...

the aluminum fuel filter is for a single tank system...    the plastic housing filter is for the dual tank system....

i have to get to a motorcraft catalog in my other computer to look up the proper number...    it will be printed in the catalogs hanging on the filter wall at the store...

just use a compression union (s)

the object in question is a reserve tank... with returns back to the tank... and returns from the higher pressure fuel rail....

the low pressure in tank fuel pumps feed this in an endless loop.. keeping it full...   the high pressure fuel pump mounted inside the frame rails is supplied from this source...

if you only have ONE tank.......  you might be able to swap the intank fuel pump for a later high pressure in tank pump...  bypassing this all together..

the later cars and trucks only used an in tank high pressure pump...

rooster

Those are some good links!!!!

I have 2 tanks, I'm off work tommoro, still need to pick up some Doreman lines and the compression unions.
Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rooster

After more study its sounds like just by-passing the valve wont work, reason being that the high pressure pump needs a resavar supply of fuel when the engine needs it, such as going up a hill. Just depending on the low pressure supply wont cut it.

I only see 2 options the first is just replace the dam valve about 150, the second , I have read is to get a used resavar from a 87-89 Bronco thats set up for 1 tank, it has no moving parts, but has the resavar in case extra fuel is needed, of course doing this you only have 1 tank to choose from. I will probley do this.

Before I do any of this I want to take the one apart I have and take a look.

rooster

I picked up the single tank resavar from the junk yard, 11 bucks, it was out of a 87 f150 (5.0) with a single tank setup. Truck run good and no leaks! Took it for a test run seems ok so far. Just need to get gas guage working right again.

dual tank selector switch....

this might be a better image...

i noticed that on one of the diagrams...  is shows that jumpers are used in single tank models... instead of a switch...

so you might want to OHM the tanks sending units from the 6 terminal connector...

and then .. test the dash gauge from that 6 pin connector also...
unplugged... the gauge should swing one way...  shorted to ground...  the fuel gauge should swing the other way....

be sure that you are just testing the dual tank switch connector to the dash fuel gauge wire...

i will look around for wire colors...

wayne petty

this wiring diagram shows the pump power wire colors at the switch...

http://repairguide.autozone.com/znetrgs/repair_guide_content/en_us/images/0996b43f/80/21/dd/16/large/0996b43f8021dd16.gif

pink and black or red and black.. is power feed through the inertia switch to the dual tank switch...

red ... is one sides in-tank fuel pump from the duel tank switch...

brown and white.. is the other tanks in-tank fuel pump.. from the dual tank switch...

i have found 3 of the six colors...  the other 3 wires. two of them  should be the tank sending units.. one should be for the dash gauge..  most of my books are drivability.. not general electrical... i know i have a 90 ranger service manual.. but it wont have the colors for the dual tanks... as they don't come... or do they...

so.. two of the other wires should have between 10 and 90 ohms or so... depending on the level of fuel in the tanks..

the last wire should be the gauge wire...

Thanks Wayne, You sure like doing home work! LOL
