I am looking at this scanner at Harbor Freight  http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?itemnumber=98614&Submit=Go   Sumner has one and he says they are a good buy.  I went to pick one up last night and they are out of stock.  They had this one in stock http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?itemnumber=99722&Submit=Go  It looks like it will do what I need but I am having trouble figuring out the difference in the two.   Does anyone have any knowledge of these scanners?

I am tired of taking vehicles somewhere to check codes and clear codes.  Most of the time it is something simple and I want the ability to do some of this myself without spending a lot of money.

I, too, went to buy the cheaper one yesterday, and they were out.  I asked the kid what the difference was, and he said the higher priced one could work as you're driving your car.  I had the $20 coupon, so I bought it.  My Ranger is a '99, and '00 is the cutoff point for using it while driving, best I can figure.

Didn't show up any codes on the ranger or the subaru sitting still.  It DID bring up the vin on the subaru, but not the ranger.   It was about $72 after the coupon.

Oh, btw, it has its' own 9 volt battery; doesn't need the one on the car, unless it's hooked up.  It also has a usb cable to hook to your puter for upgrades/updates.  Mine apparently didn't need an update after connecting to the net.  The date on the machine is 7/09.

It looks to me like the big difference is that the 98614 is capable of reading codes on a CAN system too. There is no mention of the 99722 being able to do CAN. All cars starting with the 2008 model year use CAN.

OOPS...I was comparing the 99722 to the cheaper one for $59.

i bought the 98614... after a lot of research..  i almost bought the innova 3120? obd1 and 2 kit... but it was a lot more... and it looked like it only displayed codes and history memory.. not live data...

there is a problem..  it does not display things like transmission codes... or at least i have not gotten it to display them...

there was another model from http://www.auteltech.com/ who made this one for HF...  the 98614 is this ms509

http://www.auteltech.com/ms509.htm

after i got the 98614 i found the autel web site...

and spotted this one...  for domestic cars...

http://www.auteltech.com/us703.htm

that does a lot more.. but there  have been a few bad reviews... where the data displayed.. does not match...  but that could have been a PUNT from another scan tool vendor..

there was a site on amazon.com that sold the US703 for about a buck eighty..       but then it does not do extended data  the foreign cars...  it does do generic data on all cars like the others...

Hf also sold this model for a while...  i don't know why they stopped...

http://www.auteltech.com/jp701.htm

they also had the Vw audi version for 78 bucks a few weeks ago...

http://www.auteltech.com/vag405.htm

hope this helps...   i love my 98614...  next step up might be a genesis from otc..   i have seen them on CL for 400 ...

Wayne,

Thanks for the input.  I was hoping you had some experience with these.  I checked out the ones you mentioned at Autel.   I found this one on Amazon  http://www.amazon.com/Autel-MaxiScan-MS409-OBD-II-Scanner/dp/B001LHW9YG  Although it does sound very similar, I noticed it has a 409 model number so I am thinking it may be an earlier version.  The price was reasonable but I think I will just order the  HF 98614.

that one you listed is the same as the 99 buck harbor freight unit.. that was on sale a few weeks ago

check your past flyers....   i have heard that since there is no dates on the catalogs.. that you can get a sale price from months ago..

the prices have been bouncing up just before it goes on sale...

there is also at the bottom of the HF windows... downloadable manuals... they are fairly weak for this kind of tool....     i dont think anybody knows what it will really do... i have a friend coming by tonight with a 2006 sebring.. i am going to see if the CAN function works... and tomorrow a 2004 toyota camry... with a dash light problem... probably a fuse.. but . i will check it on that also... the 98614....

i know that the 98614 graphs the sensor voltages... live ... so you can see what the sensors are doing while you rev the motor...

most later... got to go now...

well i got a few minutes on the 2006 mitsubishi..  it only showed generic emission live data... but it was still enough to let me know what was happening...

the 2003 toyota. turned out to be a cluster dimmer switch that got knocked.. i never got a chance to plug it in..    but the 98614... is still better than nothing...

I looked at that one but I bought the Harbor Freight one yesterday.  I used it to clear the codes on my pickup and van but I have not had time to mess with it much.  I think it will do all that I need.  Harbor freight has a 20% off coupon now so that cut about $20 off.  I will mess with it some more next week and let you know how it goes.

congrats...  welcome to 2010....  and the new scan tool...

people with gm's  and other brands and scan tools.. might really want to print this chart...   it will help understand what you are looking at when you get into the live data.....
