Ignition switch

About a year ago, we had a discussion about switches. Most were poorly rated. has anybody tried a Ron Francis double sided key unit? My switch in the 32 is about to die. The tumblers are ready to tumble to the floor. I went to a parts store and looked at 70's Ford pickup switches but I don't think I have near enough room for one. I really would like a double sided key. Any ideas?

you want to probably use the parts pro SE link in the left frame..

there are 1,541 results...  so you will have to page through..  and some are the lock cylinder.. some are the switch without the lock..  some are both... i also have access to many automotive ignition locks through several other sites...

Just rec'd a ron francis switch a couple of days ago. Seems good quality, certainly far better than the NAPA universal I am removing. I am happy with my purchase. Joe

take a look at this..   it is the first of 500 i searched that was a dash mount and had a double sided key..

there were some really strong looking benz ignition locks... but they were 600 cocos

i will keep searching..

there is a problem... these have a single sided key... that is easy to defeat..

I may have been the one recommending the Ford late 70's (76-78 and probably other years) during the last discussion.

There's a couple of styles, one has a slightly smaller plug, but not by much.

You should be able to skip the Ford female plug and use the female spade terminals right onto the switch proper.

That would save some room.

The junkyard switch out of a 78 Ford pickup is still going strong after 15+ years and 51,000 miles.

Only change was the lock cylinder so I could run a different key.

I don't like to carry lots of keys and used to leave my Ranger keyring with a few other keys in the door pocket of the 32.  Then I found the roadster and the Ranger used the same ignition key.  I understand there are only 80 patterns on this switch....

C9, it was based on your recommendation that I went and measured the switch. I might be able to make it fit but I'd be buying a new switch. The salvage yards around here scrapped all the older stuff a few years ago. The parts store has the switch and the tumbler but not the bezel that holds it in the dash. We don't have a Ford dealer within 200 miles that has any inventory or a parts man to help the deal. If I could go to a salvage yard and be done, I'd try to make it work. I like the look of the switch. Ron Francis is looking like a good option. I'll have to do some wiring but not alot.

By lock bezel you mean the threaded ring?


Do you have access to a lathe?

A small threaded ring ought to be quick to knock out.
Perhaps with knurled edges etc?

oh... one last thing..    ford vans used the same lock , switch and bezel up through 1979 or 1980... when the had the ignition switch on the left side of the dash..  i know there will be 75 to 80 ford vans in almost any junk jard...

2 phillips screws and the lock panel comes out..  with a tug...  the bezel can be driven loose with a flat tipped screw driver...      be sure to write down the year of the van so we can get you the proper wiring diagram to decode which wire goes where...

You guys are really going to enjoy this. I installed the Ron Francis Synergy switch. I've started the truck around 4 or 5 times. Now I have to pick up on the key slightly to get it to make contact in the on position! Tomorrow, I call Yogi's to see what the return will be. I guess we're screwed no matter what we do anymore. Do you think anyone would like it if we ordered 10 switches at once and told them we'd return 9 if we were lucky enough to find a good one? My list of new parts that weren't any good on this project is lengthy. When I did the 53 in 2001, I didn't have but 1 problem. What do people do that have to make their living doing this?

Buy the better part, then listen to the customer complain because they can get it cheaper.

which one??  they cannot all be bad...

is the wiring harness pushed on the back tight..  

can you verify the intermittent switch connection with a volt meter set on continuity beep....  and the switch in your hand?/
