Anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced code reader?Having issues with my late model GMC and want to get one for home. I know one of the parts places offer the service but I shudder at the thought of asking some young " I cannot find that in my computer kid" to pull the codes....

If you are looking for a basic code reader, that will display codes and allow you to erase them you can't beat this one http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16309. However if you are trying to read transmission, abs or body systems codes you will need something more involved. I have one of these and use it for basic engine diagnostics at work. This device also does not allow you to work with live data from the computer.

i agree that many generic scan tools cannot read transmission or codes other than emission and fuel injection related problems...

i have been doing research... this is the same brand that HF sells.. but a model they don''t

http://www.amazon.com/Autel-MaxiDiag-US703-Diagnostic-Scan/dp/B001LHVPPU

you can just google the US703 and you will see it....

this link has more test data about it

they make a different version for Vw's and audi's  but that one can be gotten at HF...

there is one for asian cars...  the JP701 also....

i ran across this just now also..

in late 79 i worked for goodyear... got sent for a few days to the GM training center in burbank for early feed back systems...  i also got the TBI class years later...   i have been trying to spread the knowledge around..

I bought one of the inexpensive hf one's that is just obdII. It has done what I needed so far which has all been engine related.

moose.. there is one thing that you might change before you invest in a  scan tool  that has created trouble on some later model 95+ or - trucks...

the electric part of the ignition switch ... the contacts get intermittent can cause havoc with the electronics as they do not get power when expected and then they can have voltage drop outs to the various systems.. which makes them act really bad...

but having a scan tool that reads live data  is worth the investment.. as you can use it on so many 96 and newer cars...   so you can see what the sensors are doing.. not just the quarter second voltage updates on the display...    i'm rambling again...

the 98614 HF unit is a good one.. but the US702 is worth the extra 50 bucks.. if you have a domestic models... mostly...

The Actron unit has worked well for me
