SG Iron, cast correctly and at the right temperature, is reasonably ductile and will bend not break

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ductile_iron

Lots of suspension stuff is also done in investment cast stainless, in various alloys

Quote from: "Monte.b"gee Mark doesnt this company make cast iron dropped axles ,one of my favourite hates

multiple companies making columns are named in the info sheet, but yes one of them does make axles that I believe are cast

Cast axles are very common in many brands of vehicles, including huge semi's ......nothing wrong with them IF they are made correctly, from the correct grade of casting material (SG Iron for instance)

I personally however run good old Henry Ford forged axles, not because I think they are any better...... I just like them

certainly is a problem with design and parts.

Franks original post was an LVVTA Bulletin that provided an initial warning

This new link is a full LVVTA infosheet with far more detail and providing binding advise to vehicle certifiers in NZ

Well worth reading and diggesting

It is now out to all Australian ASRF Technical Advisory Committee's, and will be the basis of a new TAC policy shortly

Steering ain't something to save a few bucks on

OK .... the acronyms  part, I dont know the meaning.  Are these Gubmint agency or groups formed by private parties?

As Frank said, LVVTA are the body that manages technical standards for modified vehicles in New Zealand, and also trains and supervises engineering certifiers. They do this on behalf of the Government, but are self funded I believe

The ASRF is the Australian Street Rod Federation a membership based organisation that represents rodders, rod clubs and runs rego schemes for them and the Government. We have a Technical Advisory Committee in each state. I am a former elected director, and still on the board as the National TAC Coordinator. Both volunteer positions
We are kind of a cross between NSRG, Goodguys and SEMA, but without anywhere near the dollars

Rodder's Roundtable / The end

Hey Frank

I just thought I would post and say how glad I am to hear that the site is getting a stay of execution.

I am clearly as guilty of anyone of not posting. No real reason, just busy.

But I do lurk whenever I can.

I shall make an effort to frequent the site more often, because it is too cool to loose.

I too am an IT geek, and remember well your support when HRI went turtle. Any assistance you need, just yell.......although if it dived to 5 posts a day, I guess more helpers isn't the problem

EDIT:
      I just checked my stats, and found I haven't posted in almost two years and had an unopened pm from 2007

Spare diff is all apart now. It all looks usable.

I will strip the one under it, and slip this centre in tomorrow.

Longer term mine will be getting a 9", Jag front, 454 and T400.

But I already have enough projects, so the plan is to do the mimimum to get it on the road and USE it.

If I have to I will throw a 9" in, but the combo of bits I have here would lower it 4" in the back, and then I would HAVE to do the Jag front as well, and thats a big job.

So IF I can get this diff fixed, I'll just leave it stock for a year at least.

I went and joined the stovebolt forum and they pointed me at an online manual  8)

For future reference: It says there is a small locking screw through the side of the carrier, when you remove that you can then popo out the gear spacer, remove the side gears and then push in the axle and popout the C clip hidden inside the side gears.

I will give it a go tonight

Hi Bruce, the type you describe sounds the same as Ford 9" and many others were the axle is retained by a bearing plate that bolts to the housing via the four bolts that hold the backing plate on.

On this rearend the backing plate is riveted to the housing, so that ain't how it is supposed to be removed.

I had another look this morning when I had better light, and my old fella 3.0 reading glasses

and I still can't see how it's retained.

The only ones I have ever seen use either the above method, or some form of circlip at the other end.

The fact that the housing has a removable back cover in addition to a drop out centre would seem to suggest that the axles are retained from the centre, and that you access it via removing the cover ........... but I'm stuffed if I can work it out.

I will go home early this afternoon and have another snoop around ......... maybe there is some tricky way to pop the centre block out from between the spider gears so I can access a Circlip ....... but I haven't figured it out yet.

I spray degreased it this morning, so will clean it up and have a good looksee.

I'm trying to get a new (well different) diff centre into a 1957 Shorty step I have just grabbed as a new hauler

1957 1/2 ton 3100

I must be dumb, or blind, or both, but I can't work out how the axles are retained.

It doesn't have bolt on bearing retainers on the end of the housing (like a 9"), or circlips (like Chev).

I have pulled off the backplate from the housing (obviously removable for a reason) but can't spot any circlips and the centre block in between the spiders doesn't have any obvious way of coming out.

SO.........

Other than a 9" grinder ........ how do these axles come out so I can swap centres

No......I don't have a manual for it .... a scan of that page would be helpfull.

Rodder's Roundtable / Have a glass of milk
November 20, 2005, 10:33:57 PM
Welding Gal gives off sulphur fumes. For some reason that has never been explained to me, milk helps prevent sulphur poisoning.

I have a BAD sulphur alegy. My Doctor has told me before too drink lots of milk if I get exposed to sulphur. I end up curled up in the fetal position, having violent fits.

I am also lactose intolerant.....but the doctor says "drink the milk anyway. Having the runs is beeter than having fits"......good logic I guess

My reaction to sulphur is bad enough that I started feeling sick when I drove within 60 miles of Yellowstone and had to take an alternate route.

Rodder's Roundtable / scammer
October 19, 2005, 07:52:50 AM
These are the same scams that have always existed, the internet just makes them quicker and less personal.

Old adages like "A sucker born every minute" or "A fool and his money are easily parted" are just reflections of the fact that most money making involves taking advantage of the less fortunate.

Very little new money is created. Everytime someone makes a dollar, someone else looses one.

Forget Internet scams, the stockmarket is the biggest thing around at taking money from lots of everyday Joe's and giving it too a small percentage of the population.......and the Joe's even pay fees for the priveledge of being stung.

Nah, my only sister is 10 years younger than I am, and she's so * thin people often tell her she's anorexic, but thats not the case.
I think you must be thinking of someone else, Choco maybe?

Better watch out Chris. Choco's sister is married to Reddo the lurker and he can get REAL nasty when necessary

Just for the record I would like to state that I think Both Choco and Redo look great in Arnie's hand me downs

There is a guy on the FTE forum who is into them and was parting a couple out. His handle is 51Panel from memory.

He is however in San Jose CA, so may be no use to you.
