Rodder's Roundtable / LS1 conversion?
July 17, 2008, 11:58:01 AM
No Updates for a while but here is were I am with the swap,,,sold the old motor and trans ,,finally got the guy to come down from LA to hear test drive it and  we pulled it out it gone as of last friday,I might add i think the owner of this  truck is going to miss the power but not the poor mpg it had a 350 with the Edelbrock RPM top end kit heads, cam, intake,,suppose to be rated over 400HP ,,,ran strong!
The owner tracked down a LS1 and trans all out of a 2001 Camaro with 70K,,he dropped it off yesterday,,for what ever reason the motor was separated from the trans and is missing a handful of parts, flex plate, starter, mass air, alternator, computer a few other miscellaneous!Shop he got it from said they will have everything by tuesday
Not the way i prefer to do it,,Id much rather buy a running wrecked out car and go with it from there,,,Crazy thing the owner called a half a dozon wrecking yards and turns out you have to get on a waiting list to get one of these,,
So im putting together a parts list painless wiring harness, art morrison engine plates,,Im finishing up another job and am going to roll it in Monday and pull off the front sheet metal and get started sprucing things up on the chassis,,
Il post some photos and updates as it evolves,,,thanks again for the tips so far on the install,,,,,jim

Has anyone done one before? I havnt,,iv done a half dozen Ford EFI swaps,,I have a customer that wants me to put one in his 57 chevy pickup(my old driver),,its got a mid seventies camaro subframe in it shoudnt be a problem?
Id usually pass on this but business is slow and im taking anything i can get,,

Also he is curious how much$,,,I told him I estimate give or take a few bucks 2K labor to install it,2k in parts to install the  cost for the engine and trans is about 3k so its looking like about 7k for the conversion total,,,Im i in the ball park at that? thanks jim

Rodder's Roundtable / Wheel Hop

Sum,,your right,,i didnt think about that link pushing the diff back causing it to bind,,,Iv seen on another forum were a fellow had a midly built 350 chevy with a stick launched it and blew the whole diff out of the car he said because of the blocks and quite a few others says the blocks are ok for slow and low..but maybe dangerous with any power,,mine going to be putting down about 420 rear wheel with a 5 speed and an 8.8 posi,,
Iv heard from everyone that has the Cal tracs there great and if i dint have the blocks i would just get them but the cost there almost half way to a 4 link and not for sure to work,,I may just scrap all of it and 4 link it ,
thanks again for giving me the heads on how it would push back jim

Rodder's Roundtable / Weight
March 12, 2008, 11:28:52 PM
For a comparison,,I had to have my 36 weighed to get it registered, fenderless,no door glass or regulators,5.0 with a 5peed aluminum heads, weld lights,ETstreets,8.8 rear with half a tank of gas just shy of 2300,I built it as light as i could no frills basically gutted,
from what i read the chevy small blocks weigh quite a bit more then the 5.0 fords and automatics weigh lots, steel wheels?steel belted radials?AC adds up quick

Rodder's Roundtable / need a welder

Im a fan of the hobart,I have a big lincoln a WIRE MATIC 250 it welds good but not as smooth and stable as the hobarts,,i have a handler135 and a handler 175,seem to be the best bang for the buck, what got me to buy my first hobart was a friend of mine worked for a fence and gate bisiness and they had a small hobart mig on one of the flatbeds for years,he said it wasnt put away and fell off the truck so many times it was no longer rectangular shaped he said it was closer to round and even at that it never missed a beat,,seem to be the best bang for the buck as far as the amperage goes too,,,http://cyberweld.com/ had the best deal on the last i looked,,,jim

Hey George,,,i dont much about the ignition or have much experiance with GMs but on the fuel end ,,If you turn the key in the on position and you hear the fuel pump cycle id think that would probly eliminate the fuel pump and fuel pump relay as the problem,,if you pull the fuel filter you should be able to blow thru it fairly freely,,,

Rodder's Roundtable / Paint Problem,Kosmic Clear
March 01, 2008, 12:34:06 PM
Funny I was painting at a ford dealer back in about 98 when the state law became  HVLP only,,,and i waited to last minute to buy,and ended up with the finishline too,,,and your right!!talk about junk!! I coundnt figure out why would Devillbiss put out a gun like that,,but over the years the HVLPs have come a long way,,its amazing how on the higher end HVLP guns today you can put super thick high solids paint in them and how well it atimizes the product out the nozzle,I just  picked up a couple of the Devilbiss GTI Millenium and am super happy with how they perform,,to well!! to the point were its easy to get carried away and keep flooding on the product,,I did a repair on a motorhome out in my driveway a month or so ago, whole length and about 3 feet from the bottom up in basecoat clear, gold met, with a generic speed clear,,2 coats out of the gun and it blew me away it looked like it was laminated,,,was reading a while back using a higher end HVLP  the transfer rate is upward of 70 or 80 % were the old siphon guns back in the day were only like 30%,,crazy to think 70% ended up in the air...with the price of the materials today makes sense to have a good gun if you paint fairly often,Im betting my problem is not being used to the gun,to much clear to fast(transfer rate compared to my 5 year old sharpe hvlp) jim
