Rodder's Roundtable / epoxy bonding metal to metal
November 14, 2005, 02:04:45 PM
The 34 coupe is out getting some work done so have moved on to an old project from the sidelines.
Have a dash that is normally spot welded to the firewall structure,  but had problems with rust where the spot welds were.  I have redone the area and cut out / replaced all the rust and have a new dash to go in.  If I weld it in then rust will restart in the welded areas.  I know there is some 3M  weld thru no rust goop but I'd prefer to use some of the structural adhesives that new cars are put together with.  That way I can weld the ends and paint that area (POR15)  and use the epoxy for the main part of the dash.  This will seal it plus there will be no paint burned away for rust to restart.
Any recommendations on the "goop" ?   One part epoxy or two part ??  Polyurethane or epoxy or ?   Have tried the home depot construction adhesive like liquid nails and it is a maybe but wanted some first hand recommendations ???

Really enjoy your travellog,  keep it up, I'm sure we'll see more of the west coast influence.
Is it too late to sponsor a days fuel or am I too late??
Can provide food and shelter in Phoenix if you need it,  but I'm prolly far down the list.

Well I saw the 41 conv't.  The owner was in transit to Texas so called his buddy who lived nearby to come over and show me the car.  Turns out that his buddy is a great guy and I go over to his house where he offers to sell me one of his half finished hot rods.  I'm trying reeeeaaaaal  hard to resist the temptation.
Anyway,  took lots of pics of the 41 (underneath) but stopped at work and left the camera there so will do that tomorrow.  The 41 has had rust patched but the patches are same gage steel and I would not say they are hammerwelded pro work,  but they are not gobby messes either.  The welding was oxy acet torch and my best guess is that it was with steel rod,  but everything had paint so it might have been brass,  but I doubt it.  In retrospect  I should have scraped some of it off but didn't.  There has been about 18 inch x 4 inch piece welded in the inner wheel tub on rear of both sides.  The drivers side door has a new bottom skin but you can only tell on the door jam.  The door bottom inner skin has a patch about 7 inches long right at the front of the door.  Both doors do have bondo,  but not unreasonable.  The rear tail pan has been replaced and has bondo in it but does not look shoddy.  Where it rolls under the body it is not like the original,  but you can only tell if you lay on your back on the ground.  Door alignment is  so so . About 1/4  inch gap at the top and near touching at the bottom,  but this is typical of an open car.  Was maybe 3/16  out of flush with the quarter.  The front fenders, grill and hood did not line up will but again I felt it was not serious.  None of the seams were welded or bondo'd over.  It is an original car that looks good from 6 feet away.  Up close there are some cracks in the paint and the paint does look very thick,  probably many coats.  Interior was fair to good, looked original.  but the small things were not genie type.  Generic weatherstripping,  carpet etc.  Carpet was glued down and I did not want to peel it up to check the floor.  I crawled under the car and cannot really give you an honest opinion on the body floor.  It was totally black gloss paint and I could not tell if there had been any repairs there.  It was a really bright sunny day and the black paint made it hard to see.  I guess since I could not see any welded area it must be original............but could have been black paint over undercoating.  The frame was original except for about a 2 x 2 inch area of the X that had been torched away for the exhaust to go thru.   Probably just a hurried muffler shop many years ago.
One thing that really * me off was one of the door hinges had been gas welded to the outer door skin.  I had this on a pickup recently and that is not easy to undo.  One rear fender and I think one front fender had a rust hole about the size of your little finger but it was actually on the bottom edge where the fender rolled under.  You could feel it but only see it if you laid on your back.  The top was  fair to good,  some of the snaps would not snap and of course big gaps at the windows.  (Normal for these).   The top bows were excellent and I'd assume that the top would fold down very well.  He offered to fire the  flatty, but I passed.  I wanted to check the inside of the trunk,  but every where there was carpet and it was glued down.  Chrome good.
He has all the parts to convert it to left hand drive and some extra stuff that you could sell stateside as you won't need it.
Overall I'd say it was worth the money, probably more based on a buddy that sold a 41 coupe.
Pics tomorrow if I can figure that out.  Call me if you want a verbal dissertation.  I'll be back in that area in early sept if I can help then.
I'm still struggling with his buddy's offered deal.

Rodder's Roundtable / check out
July 27, 2005, 12:39:31 AM
Dave
Your post has been up for four days now and no offers????????? Nobody in that area ??
I can't say for sure if I can check it and I don't know if you'll see this post in time,  but I'm flying into San Diego wed morn and then driving up to LA.  I will be going right past Capistrano and will have a camera with me.  I would have posted earlier but this just came up tonight.  Because of the short timing you should just call me on my cell, it's always on except during the flight which is only an hour so if I don't answer then try again in an hour.    If you get this after noon Calif time then I'll have driven past ................try me anyway,  I have to spend the night in LA so maybe...........depending on where I stay.

Enjenjo' right about the welding.  I did one very similar, cut and angled the outlet on a rams horn,  back in the early eighties.  Ran it hard for 5-6 years and then switched to a big block.  Finally threw away the old cut manifold and it still was sound.  A buddy welded it with what he called nickel rod,  but same as what Enjenjo says.  Looked ok too.

Quote from: "rooster"Thanks for the help guys!

Bib, there is another version of manifold with the air stuff on it, or at least it looks like it.  Its found on 88-95 3/4 ton pickups w/o air manifold,350's!

I got a phone call in to a guy down the street that has a LT1 but he's not home yet.

Russ, I have one, it comes close to fitting! GM # 3989041

July 17, 2005, 02:15:38 AM
Need a new starter for a BBC and before the parts guy asks my what make, model and year,  I'd like to give him a NAPA p/n  for the new style high torque permanent magnet one.   168  tooth flywheel, staggered bolt pattern.  Anybody know the number?  Pricey ?

Rodder's Roundtable / AZ powdercoaters
July 14, 2005, 12:16:19 AM
I've had good success with a powdercoater on the south side of Washington just east of 48th st.  It would be about 53 rd st if that existed.  I think it is called Arizona powder coat ????
Had a number of car parts and also wifey type stuff done.  Price and delivery ok.  They want to sandblast everything they coat which is typical.  There are always a lot of parts outside awaiting pickup or coating.  It's interesting to see all the other in process projects.

Rodder's Roundtable / turbo 400
June 19, 2005, 05:42:26 PM
Normally a turbo 400  is almost indestructible.  I've used and abused many of them and they never miss a lick / shift.   Had a 38 ford 2 ton truck with built 454,  put 80K miles on it pulling a big fifth wheel  and yet it will still smoke the duals when unhitched.  400 turbo and stock.
Once you get it sorted out you can forget about it.

Rodder's Roundtable / cab move

Enjenjo
I'm in no rush at all,  but the seller would like it gone in 2-3 weeks. I'm not asking for a freeby if you have an idea.  Thanks

That's an interesting idea and should work.  Let me know if it's successful.  If nothing else comes along,  I'll try that. Thanks

Just bought  a 39 ford truck cab off the bay and am now looking for recommendations on trucking companies to get it home.  Even though it's just a cab,  it is too much for greyhound and yet not worth calling a car hauler.
Any experiences here?  I know the other board talks about a relay,  but I've not registered there or even thought of an "acceptable"  intro.

Rodder's Roundtable / 57 caddy
May 01, 2005, 09:28:45 PM
I've seen that there are at least two of these being built by members here and so did a double take when I saw one poking out of a neighbourhood garage.  Stopped and spoke with the owner's wife.  As expected it is hubbies pride and joy,  a 27K mile one owner that he is redoing.   Saw the duct work and brake booster and recalled Enjenjo's reworked unit and realize what he was doing.
I've sent him a link to this site,  maybe we'll get a new member.
eightsecondart@cox.net   is his addy.

Rodder's Roundtable / cam
April 14, 2005, 02:40:37 AM
I did some research and the pistons are almost flat tops,  small dome and give 9:1  ratio with the stock heads.   I found a set of 73 open chamber heads for $100  but they need going thru.
I plan to put it back together this weekend with the Crane cam and the 9:1  and put it in the car and try it out.  If it pings bad then I'll redo the open chamber heads and install them with the engine in the car.  I feel my back already..........  Downside is that then the compression will be about 7:1 :(
Thick gaskets on the old closed chamber heads ??
