'82 T-Bird rack / chev power steering pump

hey all!   On my '40 pickup I'm using an '82 T-Bird rack and a chev power steering pump, with the 350. Does anyone know what the thread / fitting sizes are in the inlet / outlet on the rack and on the pump? I've got to get new hoses made up so it'd be easier if I could just take the sizes to the industrial fittings guys!  The info would probably be good to have in other guys binders too! Thanks! :D

return line at the rack is a edelman 71116 with a 3/8 swivel oring (type II)

for return lines... take a look at edelman 71115, 71116, 80020,  for pre assembeled lines... as they all go to to the hose barb on the pump


for pressure line...the 82 tbird line was a edelman 71180 with a 5/16 swivel O ring (type II) at the rack... with a 3/8 swivel Oring (type I)on the ford pump...

i would examine the edelman hoses to see if you could use the lower end of the hose for the rack and a custom upper end...

70427, 70435, 70436, 70443, 71117, 71118, 71180, 71197, 71212, 71235, 71247, ((71276))  ,80059, 91504, 91635, 91637, 91661,   all of these hoses have one end.. and i cannot tell which may fit into your rack... the other end will need to be cut off ... and the upper half properly installed..
the 71276 has very short steel tubes and is mostly hose..ooh.. thats a rare app.... 84 to 87 escort and lynx diesel still looks like a good one for a custom upper to attach to...

most gm pumps.. used 3/8" inverted flair fitting onto the back of the pumps...  and there are thousands of those lines to choose from...

if you want a scan out of the edelman catalog that i have..  pm me with your email...  there is but one... slight problem.. i just thought of...  i think edelman is out of business.. but there will be crossreferences..

i just really cannot verify that the type II fittings go into the rack other than the return line...   and that if for a 81 to 88 tbird most applications.. there is a 71235 that fits some of the other tbird appls with different ac installs..


oh.. you are saved... autozone.com uses edelman part numbers for hoses... so you can take a look at them online...

wow... the 71180 already has the restrictor in the middle of the hose..


you still have to change one end... to fit your gm pump....

i am almost sure that the gold ends on these fit into the rack... but please verify before cutting anything...

Thanks for all the info Wayne, but after trying the 71180 that the fitting place had it wouldn't fit.........turns out after checking at Speedway they have a kit especially for this combo, and the two fittings in the rack are metric!  The one is 14MM and the other is 16MM, the smaller one being for the feed and the larger for the return. The one going into the pump is a 3/8' flare.  Thanks again tho!  Larry

I have run into the same dead-end.  I purchased my rack from Speedway and started from there.  Problem is I have no clue what 14mm fitting they are talking about.  There are soooo many fittings, I can't make heads or tails of them.  If I purchased the fittings from Speedway, I still have to build a hose to connect to the AN 6 and then to the Saginaw pump.  I really didn't want to go to the AN fittings, so can anyone tell me what the 14mm fitting is?

Hey Jerry!  Believe me, I know the crap you're going thru on these fittings!  Turns out the fittings on the rack are metric - one's 14 mm and the other's 16 mm, and there's no way around it. If you got your hoses from Speedway they should be the right fittings!?? I got my hoses made up the right lengths and with the right fittings. Hope this helps.  Larry

Thanks Larry.  I have figured it out now.  I will buy a set of hoses for the TBird and then one for the GM pump, then splice the pressure hoses together.  I will still be about $30 cheaper than the hose kit from Speedway.  This is the first time I have used this forum, you guys are great.  I hope that I can reciprocate soon.  Jerry

Hey Jerry!   I went to a shop here that makes up hoses, told them what I was doing, made up patterns out of coat hangers for the length and shape, told them the fittings and they made the hoses complete. The only way to do it, and it cost me a little over $50 for both hoses. 'course that's up here in Canada so $50+ cdn is about $14.95 us !  :-(   Hey, I've come here many times with questions and these guys are GREAT!  And believe me, I've told that to lots of hot rod guys here!  Sometimes you have questions, sometimes you have answers......it all works out!  Larry

if the rack fittings are metric........ then the rack might be for an 89 to 93 tbird as those are metric...  

those racks look similar..  i have not measured...

if anybody wants    i can post a list of hoses.... that the lower ends might fit...

there is one hose with the right lower end but has a female 3/8 inverted flair fitting for the top...  i still don't know if it will fit the rack... shape wise

The power rack is definitley 82-88, I bought it from Speedway and that's what it's listed as in their catalog, and it's definitley metric fittings.

i would think that both of these could be used to splice together a pair of hoses... with the first one being cut and spliced to a gm pressure line..


oh... and by the way... the long loop that many of these rack pressure hoses have are actually a cooling loop...  as the front of the rack is out in the air flow... just to protect the system from overheating...

someone posted one of the fittings is 14mm.. i have not dug deep into the catalog yet...  there are a ton of part numbers to look through...

by selling the later rack... confusing the issue.. many people will be stuck with their hose kit...

the front suspension really did not change until the 94 year when they went to a new style front suspension.....

ok...  here are some hose numbers...

91840
91766

91842 these are all 16 mm swivel on both ends...

91704
91765 have one end 16 mm swivel and a 3/8th swivel type 2 on the other end...

are you sure they are metric.. did you see the fitting diagram for the type one and type two fittings.????  
the 3/8 fittings have 5/8-18UNF-2a thread which would measure almost identical to 16mm       16mm is 0.62992126"   .625 is 5/8"

the 5/16" fittings have a 9/16-18 UNF-2a thread would would be almost identical to 14mm... 14mm is 0.5511811"   .562 is 9/16"

on the speedway motors site.. they have adaptors to hook up their hoses to the rack...

some hose assemblers may have custom stuff that i don't list in my edelman catalog...

i seem to recall that on some racks... have adaptors on them from the factory... i may be totally wrong..
