Ford Escort question

I'm trying to help a friend with a 2002 Escort.  Issue--the air conditioner compressor never shuts off.  To shut it off for the winter he had to pull the fuse that runs the compressor clutch.  Can anyone suggest a course of action?

I know some of the late model stuff the air comes on with the defroster...
Maybe the problem is in that area... Just a thought

It's supposed to come on. It dehumidifies the defrost air. If it doesn't have enough heat, the problem is the heater.
