Quote from: "Bill Adkins"In following my new hobby doing blacksmith work I aquired an old blacksmiths post leg vice, it works a little differently but by far the most abuseable vice I have ever used. They can be found on e-bay used or a new one can be had for near 600.
Bill

hey bill have you been over to http://www.metalartistforum.com/ lots of blacksmiths over there. it's  a forum full of good talented people just like this one.

here is an example of the vise bill is talking about
blacksmith leg vice

looks like it would take a lot more abuse then a standard bench vise

I have a Craftsman with a swivel base that I have abused to great lengths over the last 30 years or so. I'm sure there are a lot better ones but I can't seem to hurt this one. I've tightened it with a cheater bar more times than I can remember and it just won't break.

River, Thanks for the link to the metal artist web site. I hadnt seen it before but I am a member now. As for the vice, yep thats the one and you shouldnt need a cheater to tighten it. It has a 2 foot long handle.

today i got to use one of the blacksmith leg vice, they had it mounted on a stand (see pic). it seemed to be very STURDY. also i got to  hammer on a big anvil today. that's not me in the pic but one of the anvils i used. i'm officially in the market for both, even tho i'm broke at this time  i even forgot to get a pic of the most impressive workbench i have ever seen. it had i beams for legs and was 5x20 feet.

on edit  i just found a pic with the bench in the background. also added a pic of the propane forge we played with.
