Of the 5 wires running to the solenoid; 2 thin to the pass side, 1 thin and 1 thick to the center and specifically the last thin to the drivers side or closest to the block, is causing me a little problem. When I try to tighten it down the stud is spinning. I can't get the nut closest to the solenoid to thread to the solenoid face so that I can secure the stud and cinch the wire with a second nut.
My concern is the spinning stud. I could probably hold the stud with grips and tighten the inner nut down so I could tighten the outer but never having opened a solenoid I'm not sure if the stud spinning is notification of an interior problem. Looking for a little info, please....Thanks, Frank

Slocrow,
take the solenoid off and take out the 2 slot head screws (one each side).  The bakelite end cover will pull off.  There's nothing much in there except a contact disc and a small spring.  Hold the end of the spinning contact bolt with a set of pliers while you tighten the nut on the outside of the cover.  Leave the nut tightened on the stud. It won't spin anymore.  While you're in there take a look at the contact disc for evidence of arcing on one side. If there has beens arcing just flip the disc over to the other side for a fresh contact area.
Hope it helps.

Yep I did Daryle, but you know how some things go,  the priorities sometimes change.  Well they certainly did this time around.  Not me mind you but around me!
By the way Thanks again for the heads up.  If things change, I still have the phone number.

Daryle,  I sent you a return email on that one expecting to get an email terlling me to go see it or not.  In the email I asked if the car was brown with wire wheels and a 351 cleveland in it.  If so I know thw car and know it is solid, but needs to be either gone over or knowing you completely re-done.  Let me know one way or the other OK

Jokester

Frank!

Just replace the solenoid.  They're only 10 or 15 bucks.  If you have to take it off, you might as well fix it right.

my 2 cents.

Good point Jokester. Now that I know what's behind the cap, I'm going to try and tighten the hold down nut and snug the wire up while the starter is in place. failing this I plan to remove the current starter and replace it with a new high torque GM small version....Thanks for the 2 cents, Frank

Do the mini you'll never regret it
Some days it\'s not worth chewing through the restraints.

I switched to the mini also. Works great. Hasn't missed a lick. Well worth the money.
