I'm sure this will have universal interest here.

How to hook up a 700R4 in a '72 Ford pickup to the column shift   .

For the maybe one of you that wants to see how to do this go HERE .

Next time I'll try and post something that maybe someone can actually use  8) .

kool.

I hooked up an AOD in a 66 Ford truck to a chevy van column.

It took a bit of geometry to get there , but I did.

Here's an easy way to figure out where the hole has to be.

I fabricate a lever from scratch, by cutting a slot in the middle of a piece of 3/16" steel to fit the shaft on the trans. I then fasten a pencil on the linkage from the column. With both the shifter, and the trans in park, mark an arc on the plate. With both the shift linkage, and the trans in low, mark another arc. Where the two arcs cross, that's where the linkage hole has to be. I then cut any unneeded parts of the plate off, and grind to finish.

This will also work on clutch belcranks, or throttle linkages.

Neat, you must have passed geometry in school  8) .  I'll try that next time.

I put an "X" on it, moved the linkage & bracket and saw if I was still on the X.  Made a slight adjustment to where the X was and it worked, "this time"   .

No interest here but if it was sbf/aod in a chevy then it would be intersting to me.  Jeff

Does the pickup shifter have detents for the column arm?

And if so, do they match the detents in the GM trans?

I haven't run up against this one yet, but I've seen comments about setting up the shifter so the detents match at both ends.

No detents in the shifter, you just feel the ones in the tranny.

As I mentioned you can buy an indicator to put on the column that has PRND321 on it.  I have one here somewhere, but can't find it at the moment.  Street Rod shops have them.

Thanks.

I had a 53 Ford with automatic once upon a time.
When the trans was disconnected you could swing the shift lever through it's arc and no detents were felt.

Maybe it was some other combo the writers were talking about, but I've read that detent-matching-scenario a couple of times and have been wondering ever since.

Had a few thoughts about adapting an earlier Ford automatic column to a T-400.

(Just what I need . . . another project.)
