wiper motor for a Model A??

I could've swore I seen a post on here awhile back that someone had used a Astro rear wiper motor for a Model A.
I've searched but haven't come up with anything
They had mounted it above the windshield in the header.
Anybody remember seeing it?

I've since gotten a used M-van wiper motor and I think it'll fit in the header
I got the body down at my friends bodyshop getting some metalwork done on it
As soon as I get the body back I'll check it out and post my findings

The best wiper motor I have found is the rare VW Thing, from 1973 and 1974. It's a compact 12v unit that has the reciprocal mechanism built into it. It's perfect for single wiper duty, being it requires no linkage, the arm bolts right to the wiper motor directly. Anything this good is quite hard to come by. I have a Mighty Wipe in my coupe, I'd rather have the VW unit as it does work better.

I have been planning on using a Lucas set up out of a Austin.  Gear transmissions for each wiper driven by a cogged cable running in a steel tube back to the motor.  Should work good with the motor located in the headliner and possibly in the trunk if I can figure out how to hook two cables together.

Same design as the Specialty Power Window set up.

Running the Astro unit, how would you drive the passenger side wiper?

Would be nice to phase out the Prince of Darkness!

I kinda looked at the wiper motor in my wifes Astro van hatch.... It has enough power to wipe the widshield on a Model A & prolly open & close the hood at the same time....It was looking great until I noticed it has almost a 180* sweep... :?  :?  Maybe use two of them...Timed juuuuusssst right  :?:  :?

The wiper issue is why I asked if anybody knew who owned the purple Model A in the photo I posted a while back from K-Zoo last year......It had a pair of wipers tucked up under the visor...Real small & out of sight....Neat  :!:

The Lucas units take up a real small footprint in the visor area, BUT, occupy the same space as the wood header.  OK if you are not running that big hunk of wood.  The motor would just give a inch of so deep raised area in the headliner in the area above the rear view mirror, mounting to a couple of the crossbows close to the roof.

I know what you mean Canuk....The header is the only thing that gives rigidity to the windshield area , so I think it kinda must stay intact.... :?

well, now way back when I had my Model A's it seemed pretty common to mount short shaft electical motors outside on a bracket attached to the windshield in order to allow the windshield to open forward. Homemade brackets or factory vacumn motor brackets were easy to come by.

With the external windshield mount another wiper could be put on an axle shaft on the passenger side and be connected to the motored wiper arm with a rod.

Most all Model A parts vendors have those.

Now later on some folks made use of inside mounted motors up in the header with long shafts that ran out under the visor for the arm. These allowed a switch to be right on the motor inside and the arm had to be able to bend to allow the windshield to open.

During my Model A period I never found a 'self parking' motor, I always had to juggle the switch to get wiper to the side.

Guess I was always a bit of a resto rodder type and preferred the factory look of the outside mounted motor.

the lucas unit you speak of.....is it from an austin mini???

am looking for a similar type of unit for my Anglia...just not sure what cars used them??

any help with telling me which cars and years used these things appreciated...thanks

The ones I have were out of Austin sedans, 12V, single speed.  Couldn't find anything on the cars to determine the year.

I believe they were used in quite a variety of English cars, just a matter of finding some that work OK and have GOOD TRANSMISSIONS.  The conduit for the drive cables can be modified easily.  I have also heard they were used in some SAABs.  Various combinations of transmission gears and crank gear in the motor assembly give different sweep angles.

The cables seem to last forever, but the transmissions can be a problem finding good ones.  I have heard that some models of Jags have a two speed motor, mine are single speed.  Some of the wiring in the motor assembly relating to the park switch needed replacing, cleaned up the armature and gave it a good grease job and they look good to go.

Do a search on some of the English car sites under Lucas Wipers.  These kinks may be of some help geting a education on this system,
