Around here, it's anywhere between $16.95 and $24.95...but, then, they also check all your fluid levels.

I change my own, and my GF's car and truck.  I have a 55 gallon drum in the garage to dump the oil into.  When I get it close to full, a local waste oil hauler will come and haul it away for free.

For the last couple years it's been almost a break even deal between changing your own and having it changed at an Oil Change place. I also figure in my time to get the oil, change it and get rid of it.  My wife got a new car this year and the dealer will change the oil for about $22, with every fifth change free. I figure that's worth it even when they try to talk her into fresh blinker fluid and whatnot when she's there. i told just to get the oil changed and tell me what else they wanted to sell her and I'd let her know if she really needs it. I still change the oil in my truck, but eveytime i do it i wonder why....  Then there's my neice who got her oil changed while home from college a few years ago and about halfway back to school the drain plug fell out on the expressway. The oil change place had her car fixed without much of a battle, it was almost like they were used to it!

They all got insurance for thier screw ups.. Ya know that may be my new occupation. Ive got it narrowed down to petrolieum transfer engineer or transportation specialist (please do not check my spelling) how bout automotive parts specialist. Or motor car lubrication specialist. And the list goes on and on :!:

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MAN AND WOMAN GETTING OIL CHANGED.

Woman drives to Quick Lube , hands keys to attendant, and goes to waiting room.  Reads a magazine for 15 minutes, pays cashier $ 25.00, drives home in a car that has new oil, filter, and all fluids checked.

Man gets up early on a Saturday morning, drives to auto parts store. Gets oil, filter, and while he is there some jackstands, an oil drain pan, one of those little air fresheners, latest issue of Hot Rod Magazine, and walks out with a bill for $ 96.52.

Drives back home, starts to jack car up. Notices the jack isn't working properly, takes out the fill plug and adds some fluid. Still doesn't work, so he driives to Harbor Freight for a new one.  $ 59.95 plus tax.

Drives back home, and by now it is lunchtime, so he makes a sandwich and sits down to watch the big game.  Falls asleep in chair, and wakes up 2 hours later.

Goes into garage and starts to change oil, but first decides to have a cold brew.  Fridge is empty, so he drives to the 7-11 and picks up some, plus some chips and dip. Total bill, $ 22.75.

Gets home, and Herb from next door stops by and they sit on chairs in the garage drinking beer and eating chips.  Then his Brother comes over, and they get out some more beer.

Everybody leaves, but it is too late to do anything to the car, so he lowers it back down, puts away the oil and parts, and says he will do it next week.

Next Saturday his wife drives to the Quick Change and has it done.

Sound familiar?  It does to me.

There was just some expose' of some oil change places in I think California, where they were not actually doing the work.  The people who caught them actually drew some happy faces on the old filter, and it was still there when they were all done.

When he was younger, my one Son worked at a Quck Change place.  He said they did a great job, and the guy in the pits had to call off each step as he did it, and so did the guy on top.  My Son still goes to them today, but I am like you, I change my own..............but am getting less fond of it all the time.

A friend paid for the deluxe job at walmart, where they check and top off all your fluids.  They put motor oil in his his power steering pump and filled it right to the top.  It blew seals and they wouldn't back it.  Probably most places do a decent job but I've heard of horror stories.  I do my own.  It's a good time to look over everything else under the car.  Of course having a lift makes things like that easier.

Back about 40 years ago I had a service place on the Pa Turnpike offer me a deal on an oil change and I found out that they had a vacuum tube that went down the dipstick tube and sucked the oil out. Never even distrubed any sludge in the bottom of the pan. That was in the days before quick lubes and I thought their cedibility had inproved. I have bought a few new cars and used them just so I had a bill showing that the service had been done for motor warrantee and I was pleased but I wouldn't take anything with miles on it to them because I think as soon as there's some other reason for them to get out of any liability they all get sloppy. My son had our old car that we had given to him and got a Wal Mart oil change that they cross/threaded the oil filter putting it back on. But they couldn't escape the liability on it because it never made it out of their parking lot and had already lost 3 quarts of oil. We've got a dealer here that does $11.95 oil changes on his customers cars but when you pick up the car you are assaulted with special deals that you ought to get.  Like an 89.95 special this week on a cooling system flush when they present you with a cruddy looking radiator cap (yours?). They also gave a transmission fluid change to a friend's car and I think they used the siphon method on it .The transmission fluid line to the radiator cooler parted at the fitting and they lost better than 3 quarts of fluid and quit moving. The dealer had the car towed in, fixed the fitting added the missing fuild and didn't understand what happened because there was no reason for them to do anything with that line. But the car has 39,000 miles on it and they have been the only people under it's hood. I'd say they are OK if you let them know that you're not dumb, they'l take advantage if they think they can. I had that happen on a Buick my Ex owned.  Local transmission shop offered a $ 24.95 fluid and filter change special.  Took it in, and the tech dropped the pan and we looked in it together, and he said " looks pretty good in here." and he set it on top of a garbage can. Few minutes later, the Service Manager, who was a kid about 22, comes walking out with a clip board, and stares into the oil pan and says "OH boy, I see you've got big trouble here."   I asked him what he meant, and he said, "see those copper colored flakes, your transmission probably won't make it out of here."

I looked over, and the tech is giving me this look like " what an idiot he is" and I said to the kid, that's ok, just button it up and I'll take my chances.  Now he goes into his sales pitch and tells me it will be $ 1500.00, maybe more, but I am putting my wife in danger.

I finally backed him down and told him that I build hot rods as a hobbiest, and know a little about cars, and he is trying to pull some s### on me.  He tells the tech to button it up, and he storms off, all p#####.

My wife drove the car for another two years, then we gave it to my Son, who drove it for another few, and the guy who bought it from us is probably still on that same transmission.

Few years later this place was on the news, a sting operation found them ripping people off. They are now out of business. :D  :D  :D
