I think it is a blinker fluid strainer.

My buddy says its a hub cap speed shim

Would plastic be okay for you today?

its not for a hub cap  :lol: ive seen one of them before but i cant remember what it was. :?:  :?:

I don't know the breakdown of a '58 steering column but it looks like a part of the PRNDL indicator housing.  Is that thing on the inside a light bulb socket?...the pic is blurry.  Sometimes it helps to throw a quarter or something in the picture so we can tell the size...if you don't tell us.

Sorry the picture is a tad blurry.  The piece is not handy (at my buddies garage) but it's the size of dome light.  I would estimate 5 inches, side to side and about 3 1/2 inches tall.  The thing inside is brass (?) so it could be a light bulb holder.
Would plastic be okay for you today?

It's a turn signal housing off a GM column. I think it's newer than 58 though.
