check engine light codes 1987 cimmaron

Hello,
 I am requesting info on how to pull check engine codes out of a 1987 caddy cimmaron. I also need the list of codes defined.  I have an OBDII scan tool but it does not go back that far. So I need some way to provide a blinking light method.

I can't be of much help but I can tell you that the reason the scan tool does not go back that far is because OBD II did not start until the 1996 model year.

jump "A" to "B" at the ALDL connector and with the key on, engine off, watch the flashes.
don't count code 12, it's a normal thing....it'll flash 3 times and then you'll get to the good stuff.

I've got several manuals that list the codes and what they mean. I still have an '88 Chevy so I'm pretty familiar with what to do to eliminate codes. Post what codes you get.
As stated before "12" is a standard code. It is actually a code for the RPMs being too low which it would be since you test for the codes with the key on and the engine not running.
Once you have the two terminals jumped turn the key on and watch the light.
It should blink: 1, 2, pause; 1, 2, pause; 1, 2, pause; then the first digit of your problem, second digit, pause; then repeat twice more.
Sometimes the computer will show a third code and sometimes not.
I think it will keep repeating "12", another code or two and then pause longer and then repeat the whole thing again.

ok, good info. Where is the ALDL connector?  Whats it look like?

most of the time it's located directly under the steering column. it looks like a  flat wiring quick disconnect that is white (usually) in color, has 8 or so openings.

never seen a white one, always black (at least gm stuff)
anyway, it'll be a 12 hole connector, rectangular, with a couple of tabs on each side.
a+b will be on the opposite side as the tabs.
