Will this wiring set-up work, or is it unsafe?
Everything will be properly grounded. Presently the electric fuel pump in this car is wired directly to the battery thru an on/off toggle switch which is mounted under the right front fender, and a real pain to get to in case of an emergency.
Can I rewire using the same setup , with a 20A inline fuse between the battery and an underdash mounted 20A toggle leading to the pump?

I don't see any boxes for adding attachments, so you'll have to imagine it from the description.
Thanks... :D

Sure, it's really no different than any other 12 accessory.  Been running exactly what you describe for the past 3 or 4 years in my Jeep.  However, put a relay in the circuit rather than just running a hot wire to the switch then to the pump, it will operated much better, and get full voltage rather than voltage that may be reduced by run of wiring and switch.

Just wire as any other relay is wired.

Yupper ....but why not hook it to the ignition switch?  Maybe leave the toggle inline as a theft deterent but use only as you feel its needed. Id also go with a relay although it depents on the amp draw of the pump if its really needed.

It looks unsafe to me.

If you forget to turn the switch off, you'll have a garage full of gas.
Got a water heater in the garage?

You need to supply the pump from a relay to assure adequate voltage.
Otherwise the pump won't last too long.

Control the pump with a fused wire controlled by the ignition switch.

A toggle switch in the control wire between relay and ignition switch is ok and can be a bit of a theft deterrent.

You need to have an oil pressure controlled safety switch in the relay control line as well.
In the event of a wreck, when the engine shuts down the lack of oil pressure opens the control line removing power from the relay which will take the pump off line.
You don't want to be pumping gas if a fuel line is torn off in a wreck.

Along with the safety switch, you'll need a primer button sourced from the ignition switch so you can run the pump prior to starting the engine.
Handy if the car's been shut down for a while and the float bowls are empty.

Wire the primer button around the safety switch.

You can get a nice primer button from NAPA.
It looks like the old 6 volt Ford starter button although it has two terminals.

Hey Bry, did you finally spend some of my money and get you a project?

I agree with Dave........not just 'cuz he looks good in them Levis........I'd wire it thru the ignition switch. that way when the car is off, so is the fuel pump. with your advanced age, I know how hard it is to remember little things

Summit has a couple switches that go in the oil line and provide a safety function.  It's cheap insurance.  To be extra safe, Ron Francis has an impact switch that cuts out in a crash so if you are knocked unconcious it will shut the pump down.

After quite a few calls, (The DIA probably went ape when they listened in on the money conversation) numerous emails with pics, and about 1100 miles of driving, I can only reveal that I may have a cat in the bag, so to speak.  No peeking until it's "done". 8)

Unless of course you were to forward one of those pics with Dave in his Levis.....  ~:)

Another item better than the oil pressure switch . Here in Australia an "ignition activity" switch is mandated for vehicles running on LPG [I think you guys refer to it as propane].  This item is essentially a "black box" that is connected to the ignition coil and switches the LPG lock offs on when engine is running, should engine stall, LPG is cut off . I used one of these in my last rod that had an electric fuel pump, the beauty of this item is that it activates when you switch the ignition on,and then times out after about 5 seconds,if you have not initiated cranking/starting. Essentially it gives you a priming function for gasoline engines, and is pumping whilst cranking ,as long as it senses ignition pulses.......Frank.
