My 51 has a dead battery and none of my other cars will jump it.  (98 Volvo S70 & 00 Volvo V70)  My Question is that for some reason when trying to jump it, my starter solenoid sticks.  Is that normal in this situation?

oh yeah, Its 12v and the starter and battery are both less than 6 months old.

LOL..my own car did JUST that the other day.3 years into a 10 year warrantied battery. No warning.Nuthin'.Went out.Came back.Went to go out.Totally lights out dead battery.Hmmmm.Boosted it.Wouldn't boost. There were some sparks/resistance to the boost.Dead short in the battery. Not enough current can be forced through it..and it creates a big drain on any other batteries in the system.I have seen this before.Leave it in there and struggle to get it going..risk other serious electrical problems. Not that uncommon..especially in real cold when one goes dead from a short like that for them to blow up when boosted/charged.Trying to boost through it with a running car can do a real # on the alternator. The solenoid most likely clicks because it is barely getting enough to fire it..but not enough to turn the starter.Bad part..the battery that was in my car was $129.99 plus tax of $19.50 and the battery rebate b.s of $5 when it came with the car 3 years ago.By the time they finished giving me the jive about the warranty/credit etc..replacement.It was a fair bit cheaper to go to Walmart..and just buy an Eveready battery.I have had very good luck with them.Old battery was 800cca so is the Eveready.Put it in problem over.

I bought the El Cheapo $20 battery from the local parts store.  They sell them with no wattanty once they have been on the shelf 6 months. I guess you get what you pay for....

The solenoud will engage, and it barely cranks, but then it won't disengage...

sounds sus...remove the solenoid wire and see if it disengages..if it does, then you have a switch problem.

My bad partly..I just assumed that all else was good..starter/cables/switch/connections and the only deal was that it wouldn't boost through the battery.I also "read" clicks when you had written "sticks"
Won't disengage when you let go of the key..or just won't disengage?
  Ya..as mentioned..Check the switch.
I have heard of Escorts in the 90's doing this..the thing willl barely crank with a boost..then the starter keeps going..finally without touching the ignition key.Bad ignition switch.
Are you sure you don't have one of those weird Jaguars where the starter and alternator were some sort of  combined unit..HAHA

I may be wrong bout this and have my facts all mixed up......

But if I remember right I read somewhere that the low voltage(low batt) and high amperage draw(starter) will cause over heating of the contacts in the solenoid which would cause them to stick and starter to not disengage........

And if I'm wrong see the first line
