A friend of mine has a Circle Track(Dirt) car and wanted me to ask what you guys think about Oil. He says some people have told him to run Synthetic and change it every 4 or 5 races, and other people have told him to run something like Castrol 20-50 and change it every couple of races.

The Class he is in is called "Street Stock" and he is running a 355 with Iron Bowtie Heads, 12:1 compression, and a solid lifter cam. Rear Gears are 5.13 and he figures he will be running  4,000-6,500rpm for most of each race.

He can't decide whether there is enough benefit in running the synthetic to be worth the extra cost or not. With an 8 quart pan, that makes oil changes pretty expensive.

I think the Nextel Cup guys are running 5w30 for racing,
and 0w30 for qualifying.
Which makes me doubt you really need 20w50.That's Old School.
You can see an improvemnet in HP and torque on the dyno
with the lighter oil.
Synthetic is good insurance, especially if the motor overheats seriously.
