I imagine we all have done that with something.  you buy parts and then gripe about problems when the real problem is lack of knowledge of the parts.

A fellow brings in his  street / strip big block powered car.. THe transbrake tranny we sold him SUCKS!

OK... We look at the car:

Tell the customer the ratchet shifter is wrong for the reverse pattern tranny... WHY? he asks

THe shift pattern is P N 1 2 3 on transbrake trannys.. WHY?

All trans brake trannys are reverse pattern, the shifter must shift the tranny back wards from neutral.  WHY?

The discussion continues like that.

We fire the car up, put it in first gear (D) take off & shift to 2nd (2)...then shift to 3rd (1).  The Customer is amazed the tranny works great.

We stop , put tranny in first gear ( D) , push button for transbrake.  Throttle the engine to 3500 rpm , release the transbrake , the car shoots off from a stop like a rocket ( healthy big block).

Customer is now happy.  It is  a nice car, well built

end of story.

I get tickled when people do no research prior to purchasing something that they have never been exposed to. One of my friends years ago has a customer that buys a drag car. He's unaware there is reverse pattern out there. I don't need to tell the rest of the story.

Back when I was in college (1974) I had a 390 Comet bracket car.  I kept going through C6 trans so when I found a Fairbanks C6 for sale in the paper I latched on to it.  We put it in one night and went out in the parking lot to test it.  Couldn't figure it out.  It launched like a pig but really picked up when I'd shift to second.  You guessed it, I was a dumb as your customer, the trans had a reverse shift body and I didn't know it.  I don't remember if I had ever even heard of one before.  After we figured that out everything worked great.  Never hurt that trans in 4 years of use.

Thats a rather funny story. Actually I used to be the same why after I bought stuff. I had no idea how the thing worked so I got mad and blamed it on the thing I bought.  Then I turned 13 and it doesn't happen anymore. haha.
