I've done a bunch of cars where the owner put the switch under the dash with the key hanging straight down.  No problems w/ the key falling out.  The tumblers will hold it in.

Have seen, however, same owners having difficult time finding said key when in a hurry or slightly under the weather.  Same goes for the switch-in-the-seat riser scenario.  If you can't see the slot, it's tough to get the key in there.  Have a couple of friends who just leave the key in the switch all the time 'cause you can't see it unless you're on the floor so nobody knows it's there.
