what to look for is flakes of metal ( aluminum or steel) or friction material.  Friction material often is sucked up into the filter media.  The band's friction material  like to flake apart

The gray goo is not that big of worry , unless there is a real large amount of it.

The bolt in drain plug kits leak usually.

my 2006 Silverado has no tranny  drain plug.  I know a guy that can get nice used factory 4L60E pans that DO have a drain plug.

let me dig up the parts.

Often retailers sell the wrong filter for the deep truck pan... the early design 4L60E filter is too short/thin  and will fall out of the pump from vibration

I'm glad you brought this post back to the top

A word of caution to all here (  you too , jim) about pan removal on a 4L60E on a truck

Usually the exhaust runs right at the rear of the pan on v-8 applications.

Be very careful if the pan gets wedged between the tranny and exhaust pipe....... there are shift solenoids at the rear of the tranny valve body.

You can break the solenoid or the plastic connectors.

Sometimes the exhaust pipes must be loosened up at  the manifolds
