Discounts are the name of the game here.......

Some input would be helpful.  Useful discounts?

I think I am 3 months shy of AARP. How old do you have to be? Looking at me it appears I would qualify.

I have been an AARP member for 8 years and have never used the discount other that on Motel/Hotel rooms. It can save $15 and up on Rooms! I just do not think about it for other items???

The biggest thing I use AARP for is the motel discounts.  I have saved as much as $15 on a single night's bill.  Really worth the money.

Hello!
I have been in AARP for 10 years. I have my cars insured with the Hartford and I have my home insured by them as well I havn't used the motel room discount but I will. I'm almost a seniour citizen that will help too.
Like you said "discounts is the name of the game" You don't seem to get many that are worth a poop anymore so as many posibilities as possible are helpfull!! Other than that the only discounts you really get are the ones you create, just like in the auto swap! Make your own discount with the vendor! It never hurts to ask, or try another vendor!

I use both for hotels, usually AAA is cheaper, about 15% and AARP is abou 10% ususally.  A friend of mine uses both the car and house insurance from AARP (Hartford)  and says they are pretty good rates.  I still have one under 25 at home, so the car rates are not as good as Safeco.  When she is gone, I will check it out again, for the house and car.

50 is the magic age for AARP.  Your spouse can sign up even if they do not meet the age if you do.  I signed my wife up a year before she was 50 and she was mad at me for months.

I use both AARP and AAA plus our local Senior Circle cards for the discounts, for Motels, Food, Car Rentals, Air Fare, and Auto Parts. Then my wife uses them for shopping at the Outlet Malls.

Use AARP for motel discounts when ever I can.  Haven't found any other use for it.  Have been a member for 8 years.

Tony; I lean towards AAA.
I was a member of AA/RP but found that although their members are offered discounts on insurancs and at many retail outlets, it's usually not the best discount available.
I do believe their supplemental health program is reasonable in comparison but they have no qualms about raising the rates.
I am no longer a member because it became evident that they sell their membership list or at least make it available to sales & marketing promotion of all types and I just got tired of all the junk "senior" mail that membership created.

AAA offers the best discount for motel rooms that I've found in a impromptu situation. Planning ahead and using the net to pre-register is still the best.

When I got a quote for regular auto ins. it was higher than I pay now. Note, I've never been asked to show proof of membership when getting a motel room.

I do not belong to AARP because I disagree with their politics, nuf said.

While traveling this summer, I have been able to get a 10 to 15 percent discount on motel rooms just by asking.

I have had AAA in the past, may do it again.
Welcome to hell. Here's your accordion.

In the past I have used the AAA as a discount in a motel, never show'd a card , never been a member.

I was curious about the selling of mailing list items for each company.  I also am not fond of AARP politics in some areas.

I'm with Frank (enjenjo), after trial lawyers they're the second biggest lobby in DC looking to pick the taxpayers pocket.  There are many other sources of discounts without supporting leaches.

The good news is that after about 4 years they stop sending you their junk mail.
